View Full Version : Modding an RX-8.

I am currently modding an RX-8:D . I have done the exterior (lowered ride height, semi-blacked out windows, rear wing, stereo), but was hoping for some suggestions for the mechanics, so all sugestions are welcome (even the really dumb ones).

Next time, spend that money on performance stuff like better brakes, better tires, suspension components, engine mods...The RX-8 looks decent as is externally, so it doesn't need much.

How many cars do you have?
I would try upgrading the ECU first, if you are on a tighter budget...
What is your budget?

I would have to agree, but since you have already spent teh money then maybe some headers, exhaust system(I am guessing that you haven't done this already by the description you left above), cold air intake, maybe even better wires.

as you guessed, this is my first go at this I was violently opposed to it but my son told me to give it a go. I have made a compromise and am trying to make it look prety much like stock, only slightly meaner. Budget itn't too much of a problem, but all up I'm looking at 50k tops (USD). Have spent 27k on the car, 1k on stereo/dvd, and 3k on the exterior and new suspention components, so have 20k left. In-case you were wondering, i dont usually have that sort of money, it was a bonus.
Other car is a TVR Tamora, if you want to see pics, go to http://www.tvr-eng.co.uk/intro.html, it is the same spec/colour as the model there.

upgrade cooling system than take the general basics suck as intake/exhaust/header or manifolds and ECU.

i decided it wasnt worth my time and sold it on to a [evidently retarded] kiwi bloke for a $500 profit. I think i might use the cash to part exchange my tamora for the marcos tso r/t when it comes out. that way i'll be able to have the factory do everything for me (they even do an engine upgrade). i'll put all the rest towards painting my house

Drop in a three rotor motor...Pro-tuned, makes sure the brakes are super quality for high speed work and the suspension is up to the job of turning a 200 mph car....
Or just get a professional to do it, aka, turbo charge it to high hell. Then beat Vipers, TVR's, 'Vette's, even *gasp* Skyline's. :)

Minus all the stickers and with a better set of wheels. Preferably not white.

In my opinion those white wheels match perfect the blue car.

I'm just not a fan of white wheels period. I don't like chrome much either. I go for the race car look myself. On dark cars black wheels with a polished lip look awsome.

well i dont like white wheels for some reason.. so if i had an rx-8 id probably get a dark color wheel like... black or something.. dark cars with dark wheels HOT!! ( in my opinion lol)

Stupid wheels, even number spokes i garentee unless they're carbon they're bend wheel rims with anymore power. I like white wheels though.

Yeah I like the looks of powder coated black wheels too. It's no RX-7 but the 8's are still cool. They lack alot of torque. WHat kind of gears do you have in there? I say that becuase i hear they are hard to get going becuase you need to get the engine up to like 8k to get the horsepower you need. If you got a supercharger to give you some low end boost or an electronically controlled turbo so you can get some low end then maybe get a deeper rear end like a 3.55 or even a 3.75 at the lowest. Also cat-back exhausts and intake but if you only have pocket money right now then K&N Filter, (do they make a TB air spacer for RX-8's?), Chips are not too bad ($200 or so). Also Carbon Metalic brake pads. Lighten things up too. Take out unnecessary wieght like spare tire, back seats, etc. When you loose weight then everything improves; Acceleration, top speed, handling, braking, Loose the cheesy sound mufflers on the air intakes too (if they have any).

Man, he only needed some advice. He didnt needed to make a racing car :p I dont think he needed so much torque. He has also family so why would he take off back seats?

Not really. It follows the same principle as all internal combustion engines. Air+Fuel+Spark=exlosion=power. More air & fuel means more power just make sure the Renesis engine can handle the power. What is are block & componants rated too. Usally it's 1.25 or so times the power the car makes (safely). ex. If it makes 238 hp (with the 6-speed it's 197 with the 4-speed) then you are good to 300 hp or so (260 with the 4-speed) but thats just the case with most IC common production motors. Like i know the Viper is good, engine, tranny, & all drive train, are to 800 hp (says the factory). The Civic is good (safely) to like 400 or so (i think) Talk to SVT or MazdaSpeed. Ford owns Mazda so maybe they know a thing or two about it. It's best to go straight to the top instead of getting the run around from all of us.
Then again my Ex Girlfriend had an RX-7 with a turbo and a 150 shot of Nos with no problems so maybe Mazda engines are build strong.

Dude, they are both internal petrol combustion engines but they require different tuners
nizzledizzle
Jan 19, 2005, 3:43 AM
WAYYYYY different tuners i agree. i can do cylinders but whatever they call a rotary's combustion system i cant do. dont get me wrong ive done extensive research on how they work so i get the basics but i couldnt mod one for the life of me

FYI - I wouldn't worry much about suspension unless you are planning on track use. The RX-8 comes with great suspension and is the first car in (US) history to recieve a 5-star rollover rating. I'm planning on getting lighter engine components and removing unnecessary weight in the trunk to make it lighter.

Paint it purple, get a scissor ("lambo") kit for the front doors, and a gullwing kit for the rear ones!
Of course, I'm just kidding.
...Sort of.
I really do want someone to do this, so I can;
1) See what it looks like
2) Laugh at them

I think you should get a supercharger.
It would work well with the high REVs of a RX-8.
Intake, ECU, headers and exhust would be the main things I would change on any car.
