Default Top secret Corvette info leaked!

Yes boys and girls. It's time for another Z07/BD/SS Super Corvette thread!

Some of you may go "buh durrrrrr!" and act all mentally challenged, however, the poster of this info seems to be a reliable source because he speaks with confidence and the info seems to make logical sense. So don't be surprised if everything he says is right on the money come NAIAS 2008.

The most useful, shall we say, piece of info from this leak is that the new Super Corvette will be designated with the "SS" badge and that it will most likely be a 2009 model year. The Corvette Forum has some info on the C7 Corvettes, which is reported to begin production somewhere in the middle of 2010.

I see more and more wrong information floating around on this car everyday, so let's fix all that right now. Rest assured I'm not guessing on this stuff.

Let's start with the obvious that will not come as a surprise to 99% of the people here.
  • The motor is a 6.2L supercharged V8. It's called LS9. I still see some articles and a few people thinking it's nothing more than an LS7 with a supercharger. Some people still also seem to think it will be a turbo'ed motor and not S/C'ed. The decision to make the motor S/C'ed was made *at least* a year and a half ago. A supplier (which I won't name) was chosen to make the supercharger at that time as well, if not earlier. The supercharger will utilize an intercooler that is integrated into the intake manifold. While the motor is making significantly more than 650hp on a test stand, I would look for it to be rated very close to, if not at, 650hp.
  • Do I even have to say it's not switching to a mid-engine...?
  • The program code is GMX245 SSC.
  • The body will have significant use of carbon fiber as well as some polycarbonate. As for CF use, expect at least the hood, roof, fenders and rockers to be CF.
  • Program timing is the big one. The super vette has never been a car for the 2008MY. That would've made it going into production sometime in 2007 which just isn't possible with the amount of engineering work needed. The original timing for the car had it starting production in March of 2008 at an annual volume of 1500 units. While I'm not aware of any volume change, the production date has changed. Due to issues GM is currently having with a supplier (which I won't name) involved in the program, the start of production has slipped to July 2008.
  • Expect this car to debut at NAIAS 2008. There is only one auto show GM would debut a car like this at, and it is Detroit. The only way you wouldn't see this car at NAIAS 2008 is if the program suffered a major set back or was cancelled. While a major set back is always possible on a program with such tight tolerances as this one, cancellation at this point would take an act of god given the money already invested in the program.

Very interesting. I really want to see how well this car will perform in real life and on track. Either way its going to be fast and there will be a million billion threads on it when it comes out. I doubt Chevy will let this car down, its the halo model for GM.
Can't wait to see it in person. Also can't wait to see it go up against Lamborghini, Ferrari, Pagani etc.

Edit: For the C7, In a recent issue of Motor they said that the new Corvette (C7) will be engineered to make it easy for right hand drive conversions and should be sold as a Chevy through HSV dealers in Australia. Same goes for the Camaro.

ha! I know a few of you would be aware of this already. I'm registered on the Corvette Forum but not a poster and I haven't been checking that often lately.

It's funny because I was reading on autoblog.com and it had a little piece on how the new super Corvette will be called SS, not BD/Stingray/Z07/Z06 R/etc. And so I clicked on the source link and it led me to Winding Road. And on that blog the blogger did not cite where he got HIS info, but he did mention the program code GMX245-SSC, and I just googled it and it showed only two results: the DigitalCorvette thread and a Corvette Forum thread.

Agreed. I wouldn't be surprised if the Corvette SS matched the performance of most supercars.

Now the real interesting question is how GM will balance out the C6 SS with the C7 Z06.

The Corvette SS will be out for a few years until they start the C7 in july 2010 as a 2011. The C7 Z06 will debut a year or so later. They have the product codes out, but as for the design its sketches and clay only right now. Don't expect to see any C7 drawings for a few years. Its all under heavy security. Plus the concept won't have to see the light of day until they are ready to show it. They have underground tunnels in their design facilities.

Very interesting, can't wait for this. LS9 engine will be extremely powerful, and superchargers are always good on big engines. Styling will be interesting soon. I still think the C6 design will look modern and fresh even by 2010, but new styling is awaited.

I can't wait for this car, it would be lightweight, and extremely powerful, would get some of the supercar markers a little quivery, eh?

The Supercharged engine sounds like fun, but I kinda hoped it would be a C7 Corvette now that it has been postponed a year.
Anyways, it's gonna have a hell of an impact if it has the same bang for the buck value as the Z06.

Is the C7 gonna be built of Zeta? If so, expect it in RHD from the start.
