The Audi R10. What an amazing car.
The new Audi R10 TDI is powered by a completely new 5.5-litre, twelve-cylinder bi-turbo TDI engine which is extremely economical and quiet. Over 650 hp and more than 1100 Newton metres of torque.
Audi Sport North America made history Saturday as the diesel-powered Audi R10 TDI of Tom Kristensen, Allan McNish and Rinaldo Capello won the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. The new prototype is the first diesel car in the world to win a major sports car race.
It was the type of debut Audi was hoping for in preparation for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The German manufacturer used Sebring as a test for the most prestigious sports car race in the world, set for June 17-18.
The No. 2 Audi won the opening race of the 2006 American Le Mans Series by three laps over Intersport Racing's No. 37 Lola B05/40-AER. After winning the pole position, the No. 2 car had to have its heat exchanger switched before the race and had to start the race from pit lane and in 34th position. But by the two-hour mark, the pole-sitting car had moved back into the lead when the No. 1 sister car had to pit

It's winning. Even if every race incurs more loss than gain to Audi, it's scoring a massive amount of publicity, which generates sales.

Can't be too much of a waste if they're making 1 billion+ a year? Audi's racecars (like other manufacturers) just help them gain publicity (like others have said) and sell more cars. So hey why not waste if you're going to make it back in a few weeks time?

NICE!!!
I really like turbo deisels in evry day cars but this is just one more pruve they ll get more and more reputation..mybe not in US becouse they are IMO even little ashamed to have deisel in a car, especialy hi-class, like in Europe 10 years ago, but here about 40% of cars are sold with deisel engine and i have already decidet my next car will be deisel for shure.

Audi is killing sports car racing. No other big manufacturers are present in Le Mans. Why doesn't Audi enter F1 with a 300 million dollar budget instead of terrorizing the small independent privateers in Le Mans?

Diesel F1 car. That would be interesting. Hell, if the French can win a few races, then why can't Audi?

Its not Audi's fault that there are no other works team and they have just as much of a right to compete at Le Mans than the privateers. However Peugeot are entering next year with a diesel engine so that should be a good battle.
