View Full Version : Bump drafting at Dega'

USA HORSE

This weekend NASCAR is at Talledega Superspeedway...
Due to last years 25 car pile-up, there will be no bump drafting. This rule will be put in effect at Dega' for the first time. To prevent the drivers from any bumping, the extra support bars welded in the nose for renforcment will banned. So you better lay back on the other guy or your get a smashed-in front end, ouch! with all the erodynamics at dega' that will hurt.

Do any of you think this will make it safer?
What do you think the outcome will be?

I think the drivers will still try a little bit (#8 in piticular) just to see their limit, and eventually result in another 25 car wreck. Then theyr'e back where they started.
But i'll miss the "slam drafting" it was fun to watch. Some of the drivers are complaining about the new rule as well.

round round round round round round round round round.
from one of jc's article:
From day one American motor sport was all about sponsorship, which is why the oval raceway was developed. It meant the whole crowd could see all the sponsors’ names all the time. The cars never zoomed off into a wood.
well on topic:
it'll be more difficult to go
round round round round round round round round round now...lol

Dude what's the avg lap speed there I will surely dl it thru bittorrent since its the fastest track in NASCAR right?? Is it the fastest oval for motorsports saving the Arizona and other proving grounds and the nardo oval??? I think NASCAR is really cool in its own way but I would like at least 25-30 percent road course though

This has pretty much been known for a while since they had announced it some time ago. But I think drivers should actually be worried more about the turns because if they screw up on their turns and cut someone off, that's worst than bump drafting.

To say you hate NASCAR is one thing....but now you say you hate their culture with a passion...? whats wrong with the fans, they may drink a lot of beer and fly the reble flag...but you went from dissing on the sport to dissing it "culture"...poor argument.

Just like you and your dismal black metal assault huh? Hypocite.

Anyways, I read the "Due to last year's 25 car pile-up", so I'm guessing they're putting into effect something that stops this?

Well, there's goes everything I've ever watched NASCAR for.

Sorry Horse, just not as enthusiastic as you. ;)

USA horse you havenb't answered my question what is the fastest lap there by a Cup car?? PPl who don't like NASCAR stay away don't make it another Stock car bashing thread. And for that matter F1 is nowhere near being the top road racing series in terms of excitement offered per lap. MotoGP takes the title

Asking Horse for facts is pointless. His opinions are always in top gear while his knowledge is stuck in granny low. Here are some Talledega facts.

Bill Elliott set NASCAR record qualifying lap of 212.809 MPH (44.998sec/2.66mi), 5/1/87.

Lyn St. James sets a world record closed course run for a female at 212.577 mph in a last gen Thunderbird, 10/11/88. This was a Melling Racing/Bill Elliott NASCAR 'bird, but not legal. It had taped seams, plexi side windows, and lowered ride height. Bill coached her. When she was asked how fast Bill could go in the car, she said, "as fast as he wanted to."

Patty Moise upped the women's world record twice in 45 days ending 1/23/90 to 217.498 mph, driving a Buick.

Mark Martin set fastest NASCAR 500 mile (caution free) race average of 188.354 MPH, 5/10/90. (This is only slightly below the all time 500 mile race record speed of 189.727 MPH, set by Al Unser, Jr. at the CART Michigan 500 a few months earlier.)

Mark Donahue set the closed course record at 221.160 MPH in a Porsche 917K/30. This stood as the world record for 4 years; the US record until 1986. He said he could have gone faster, but he would have blacked out. Sustained vertical G's were only 4+; but 'Dega was very rough back then, so peak G's went through the roof.

Rusty Wallace tested a modern aero NASCAR car without its restrictor plate on 6/10/94. He went 221+ average, 228+ on the straights.

They may be low-tech/stupid/redneck, but they're not slow!

I agree with juggernaut that the purely bored/inexperienced/ignorant should keep their nascar bashing in the nearly pointless "NASCAR vs F1" thread. I've been bored at Atlanta MS (AIR?); but not at Talladega. When 42 cars come by in less than 3 seconds; the earth shakes, and you smell hot rubber and rich mixture. This repeats in less than 50 seconds. The fans need the caution periods to catch their breath. Anyone bored by this needs to go to a dog show or an undertaker!

HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH

Two men were apparently trying to put up a flag pole near the Talladega Superspeedway when they hit power lines.

Talladega, AL -- Two NASCAR fans are dead after hitting power lines with a flagpole they were putting up.

A spokeswoman at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama says the two men died at a campground outside the track on Monday. Fans commonly use poles to fly flags to cheer on their favorite driver.

Witnesses say the men were trying to anchor the flagpole when wind pushed it into power lines.

A man who was near the victims' camp site says the two were trying to pull the flagpole off the lines when he heard "a loud pop." He says the victims were lying on the ground and women were trying to get them away from the power lines, which had fallen.

The Aaron's 499 race will be run at the track on Sunday.

I LOVE NASCAR!!!!

I might hate the fans in NASCAR, and I might think it's boring as sin to watch, but I have the most utter respect for those drivers.

I don't think people realize how hard stock car racing really is.

Your last sentence makes as much sense as NASCAR... NONE! When you've stood 10 feet from an 8000 horsepower Funny Car as it launches down the track NASCAR becomes boring...

Nascar is a spectator oriented sport. Drag racing is whereas involvement/participation oriented sport. The top classes of NHRA are extremely cool

NASCAR wanted to get big time; I hope they're happy now. Spectator fatalities are news.

Friends who went for years said there were deaths almost every year at Talladega; usually drunks falling off a U-Haul truck or a school bus/race camper.

Living in Georgia; Alabama jokes are stock equipment. It's handy to have a state that sucks worse than yours next door; that's why the trees lean to the west.

This is a a true story. About 12-15 years ago, I went with a friend and his 2 small children (this is a clean story!) to Lake Wedowee, AL, towing a boat for some skiing/tubing. We were less than 35 miles from Talladega on race day at a popular spot called "the rock." We could not pick up the race on a factory GM radio. Some ladies we knew could not pick it up on a stock Ford radio. Some guys showed up in a Chevy PU with a jammin' stereo playing (No Lie!) Lynyrd Skynyrd. We asked THEM if they could get the race. They said, "Yeah, but we turned it off after Earnhardt wrecked."

I'm somewhat familar with the new rule, and if history is bound to repete itself then this rule will be tweaked and changed and fluxuated until next millinium. just look at the "gentelmans agreement" a couple years ago to what it is now, as the "lucky dog". Even more look at the way the field qualifys using "owner points" and lap times. Also the "impound rule" has come a long way and is almost out of effect now.
I could go on forever, but i won't. whatever happens IT IS NOT PERMINATE.

BTW--hahahaha
that pics halarious, sombody thinks he's the INTIMIDATOR.
