What US track is this?

Ghalos
Apr 26, 2006, 11:09 PM
Is that Michigan?
If not, I'm betting, based on the water locations, Sebring? (I'm doubtful since that's in the middle of nowhere)
Is it a major track? Road Atlanta? VIR? I'm clueless...

Good god, neat idea Steve.

My guess is Road Atlanta, but I dont see the hairpin turn so I think its wrong.

watkins glen?

Ghalos

I doubt it'd be the Glenn because you can't see the Nascar part of the course.

Brainerd raceway? i have a good feeling about it.
wut gave me a clue was "Ghalos" talking about lakes. "Minnisota: land of 10,000 lakes" i believe thats their state matto.

FunnyCar gets a cookie! No warranty on freshness.

Track known formerly as Donnybrook Speedway lay dormant in 1972. Rich privateer (and most SCCA championship-winning) Jerry Hansen bought the track and reopened it in 1972 and renamed it for the locals in Brainerd MN. Can-Am raced there at one time. Their website is lousy.

Woah - that's a small pic.
I would say Texas World Speedway - but they are still operating as far as I know.

Las Vegas?!?

I can only capture tiles from terraserver without giving away the location. If you think that is bad; this is Texas World speedway: a virtual copy of the Michigan 2-mile oval near College Station TX (boondocks!) with many alternate road course layouts. IMSA GT and Trans Am ran there years ago (in murderous heat before sparse crowds).

Minnesota...duh. I should've known that since I'm 22...*sigh*

i figured you were getting them from Terraserver or Google Earth, they both make for some great pics.
BTW yea Texas World speedway, michigan, and california speedway are look-a-likes.

My junkyard 'puter will not process the bulk data that Google Earth attempts to download for its "user friendly/can't read a map" format.

As previously stated, my pics are tiles from Terraserver.

This is a dragstrip right beside an Interstate:

i'm not sure what that link is leading me to, just looks like a highway. where's the track, unless its a drag strip? jk

SteveFX

The answer to post #7 is: Upper Marlboro Maryland.

What former sports car course is this? It is currently used for shifter carts. Diving downhill to a kink onto a dam looks really fun...

wow! thats tuff. for one, its reeely tiny, even if i click on it, so i have my face planted up against the screen, squinting my eyes, i should use a magnifined glass.
the first picture was good size once you clicked on it, can you do the same for this one?

I suck at this game. There are too many tracks, and I don't know the turns and stuff by heart.

SteveFX

Mybad. Terraserver images are easy to size/buffer/print; but are very large to download on a dino'puter.

The dragstrip linked in post #14 is on the west, southbound side of I-57 near Marion IL. It's a pleasant surprise to see 2 hot cars going at it (towards you) just yards away when towing down a boring interstate!

The last pic is Lake Garnett KS (ck it out, monkeyfkker. Is it worth a nighttime blast?). It was used for car races in the 50's & 60's; only karts now.

-----

When I first heard about VIR being ressurected a few years ago; I immediately went to Terraserver. The 1998 aerial image shows a perfectly intact race track abandoned for 20 years in the middle of river bottom/foothill farmland. Surreal.

See the oak tree at the southernmost corner? The turn is still called that. Decades ago, Carroll Shelby said, "One lap at VIR is worth 50 at the Glen".

The VIR Grand Am race last Sunday was awesome! It was won in the last 2 turns. With 17 laps to go on a restart, 6 cars (all had led laps) were in close train. Points leader Scott Pruett (#01 Compuware Lexus/Riley) stalked Max (the axe) Angelelli (defending champion #10 Suntrust Pontiac/Riley) in the closing laps. The announcers figured Pruett had the plan to win. On the final lap; a GT car made Max brake a bit early. Pruett went for the kill. Max blocked him. The polesitting Long/Rockenfeller #23 Porsche/Crawford went for the inside. #10 and #23 banged (carbon fiber?) fenders no less than 5 times before the Porsche went ahead for the win. Class act 3rd place finisher Pruett said, "If you didn't like this race, you're no race fan!" I concur.

Bar/restaurant chain "Ruby Tuesday" sponsored the polesitting/winning Alex Job Racing Porsche/Crawford. The CEO of Ruby Tuesday announced firm sponsorship through '07, with options to '09. Money behind (experienced) Porsche power makes the other teams worry...

I think it'd be awesome to find an old race track and resurrect it and start holding races again. It would be so much fun.

Easy 1. We race it 2-player almost weekly in '68 Mustangs on TOCA 2. 1 & 3 give me fits; I have the handle on 9-10 (karrusel) and 12 (Canada).

It's my favorite road course because I go to Elkhart Lake all the time. And I can Hear the cars from my dad's house. I also got view around the track in a helecopter!

Someone already said Road America. That one was cake. And like Steve, via gaming, in Forza, the only spot I often have an issue is turn 6 and 11 where I'm often going either too fast, and locking my brakes on #6 (and thus, playing "HI, MY NAME IS SEAN!" with the barriers), or on #11 where I'm going wayyyy too fast into it, and losing rear end traction, and swapping ends into the crash barriers.

Ghalos; we (3) are having problems with our cheapo Pelican wheels on Forza; so I can't make recent comment on Rd AM there. It and L Seca are beotches compared to those tracks on TOCA (you can pull a Zanardi at Laguna Seca's corkscrew on TOCA!). On Forza, we have more time on Maple Valley Long, Alpine, and Sunset Infield. My brother and myself have watched 150 collective races at Rd ATL. We like it. Our 3rd party hates it. Go figure.

I-20 is that close? They sure route one through the countryside getting there...

Think Spain. Think Seville...
