Trans Am say they're on hiatus, but considering Speed GT has alot more exposure, fans, and momentum I don't see Trans Am coming back any time soon. Good thing too, it's become a garbage series now anyways.

What is the meaning of open wheel and non-openwheel ?
vmax
May 27, 2006, 2:50 PM
non-open wheel cars have covered wheels, for example Audi R8
http://img73.imageshack.us/img73/484/audir8024uy.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
and open wheel car do not have their wheels covered, example: Formula 1 cars

I havn't really seen much non open wheel racing but this looks intrasting.
Created in 1993 the JGTC series (All-Japan Grand Touring Championship) can hardly be compared with any other series for Grand Touring cars such as the FIA GT Championship, AMLS or EMLS. In those series no factory cars are allowed. In the JCTC Nissan, Toyota and Honda introduce real works cars. Regulations concerning the engine are very restricted in JGTC racing. Japanese regulations call for the use of smaller air-restrictors as compared to those allowed by FIA and Le Mans regulations. That means that even in the highest class (GT500) the speed of the cars in the straight is lower than e.g. that of FIA GT cars. However, the presence of works cars in the JGTC resulted in much more liberal rules for the aero-dynamics of the body. That means that the Japanese GT cars are much quicker than the FIA GT cars in cornering and braking. Or, as was said by Jiro Kaji, the secretary general of the organising GT-A: "We try to approach racing from a different angle. As the tool for this, when the performance of the car reaches a certain level, we introduce means to bring the cars back to equality. In this sense, our line of thought is different from any kind of Formula or Touring car race ever held. I think the JGTC has gathered so many fans thanks to the appeal of the cars on one hand, but the real reason for drawing the spectators out to each event is because of the interest in the race itself. We have made it this far together, and I think that if we can maximize the series and continue to improve it, we'll have true car racing entertainment."

JGTC racing is in Japan as popular as DTM racing in Germany, as Nascar racing in the States or as V8-Star racing in Australia. Several non-Japanese racers entered during one or more years the JGTC series. Among them the ex-F1 racers Erik Comas (F), Pierre-Henri Raphanel (F), Bertrand Gachot (F), Pedro de la Rosa (E), Olivier Grouillard (F), etc. Among the other non-Japanese famous racers having been seen during one or more seasons at the JGTC we count Marc Goossens (B), Tom Coronel (NL), Paul Belmondo (F), Ralph Firman (GB), Michael Krumm (D), Wayne Gardner (AU), Dominik Schwager (D), Marco Api-cella (I), Patrick van Schoote (B), Sebastien Philippe (F), Andre Couto (PT), Jeremie Dufour (F), Dilantha Malagamuwa (SL), Richard Lyons (GB), Benoit Treluyer (F), Paolo Montin (I), Charles Kwan (HK), Adam Wilcox (GB), André Lotterer (D), James Courtney (AU), Ronnie Quinta-relli (I),etc. Most of them were racing in the GT500 class, where engine capacity oscillates around 500 bhp. GT300, where engine power oscillates around 300 bhp, is nearly exclusively in hands of Japanese racers.
Initially there were 6 rounds per season, now it is already 8 rounds, with off-championship 2 All-Star races at California Speedway (USA). Attendance of public, cars and racers is much higher than in FIA-GT. Moreover the JGTC has an excellent web site, even better than Nascar's in the States. FIA GT with its horrible web site could take great lessons from it. [JPVR]

The difference in NASCAR Nextel Cup and Busch cars is wheelbase, 200 lbs, and compression ratio.
Trans Am had actually gotten more interesting a couple of years ago with Jaguars, Listers, and Panoz' added to the mix. Their web domain expired 3/6/06.
SCCA couldn't promote a barbecue to a wolfpack; much less a professional racing series!

1st of all why would u wanna watch a car go around in a circle for hours there is no excitememt , 2ndly no i think the V8's are a much more competative and way betta series. V8 supercars is an international series now and that kicks ass. The cars that we see racing actually represent cars we drive on the street. All the diffrent manafacuters of cars look diffrent. "Lets watch the same looking car go around in a circle for hours" , whats the fun in that

Dude V8 Supercars are purpose built tube framed race cars with no similarity with road cars whatsoever except for the engine block just like in NASCAR

however, V8 supercars don't do mainly oval racing which one reason alone to watch it above NASCAR.
That Bathhurst looks like the Australian equivalent of the Nordschleife, amazing.

The engine, suspension and gearbox are the only things they dont have in common with normal road cars. The displacement of a V8 supercar is more than a litre smaller than on a road car and the block is completely different.
They are not tube framed, they use the actual shell of a a real commodore or falcon and have an extravagant bodykit placed on it. The actual regulations themselves state for the car to compete it must use the body of its road car equivalent.
I was privileged enough last year to see them pull the bodykit of Mark Skaifes wrecked commodore at clipsal before they panelbeat the body back to shape, resprayed the car, fixed the engine and transmission and then placed a new bodykit, front splitter and wing on the car.
I have a video on the making of a V8 supercar, its pretty informative actually. The team basically buys a BASE model car then rips all of the trim out of it, gearbox, fuel tank and engine. They then place two racing seats in the cabin with a roll cage and a new fuel tank, Strengthen the engine bay before placing a 5L in there mated to a new gearbox. The car is then fitted with a new suspension and the camber of the wheels is adjusted accordingly. The V8 Supercar bodykit is then fitted and the car is sprayed with its sponsors logo. The car is then weighed and should weigh no less than 1355KG (Without driver, Drivers are allocated a further 75kg, if the driver weighs less they are required to place ballasts in the car to make the difference) The car is then dynoed to 635BHP, Following a series of scrutineering tests from the officials the car is allowed to race.
Apart from having a V8 and being a touring car series V8 supercars have no resemblance with there NASCAR counterparts.
I can tell you more if you like, its a shame I cant post the video explaining all of this up for everyone to see.

Aahhh mister Wanna...The moderator for V8-Supercars lol. I was waiting for you to reply to that. Very well explained.
BUT...for pure sound? NOTHING...NOTHING beats sitting at the end of turn 4 at Daytona as 42 cars come hurtling toward you at close to 200mph...the turbulence blew my hat off my head and sent it up and backward 20 feet into the air...my face felt like like Jeremy Clarkson in the Ariel!!!...a pure wall of sound.
I could say top fuel is the ultimate vehicular audio but as one of the owners of the (R.I.P.) Canberra International Dragway and an employee of Western Sydney International Dragway , after seeing over 3000 top fuel runs all over (except Kwinana) Australia , 4 seconds of it is not that great anymore. Gimme supergas or prostreet anytime.

Nah I'm just a permanent WSID official but I will be when I get my LVL 2 Speed licence and Provisional Circuit licence...Hillclimbs and track racing in Aussie Legends are going to be the duck's guts for me.
I'll find out for you about A.I.R. cause that seems like a rather bogus move for motorsport over there.
When Canberra closed down , no racers offered any support for it's re-opening. All the bigtime racers heard about Jim Read's plans to build WSID and , like dogs , they just lapped it up. I can't complain though as my father is a commentator there and I used to run numbers in the control room (now one of the rubber sweepers...best job at a dragstrip IMO , and oil rat < oildown maintenance. nice name for a shitty job lol)

A.I.R seems to be used less and less these days, Mallala has taken over most of the states racing - excluding dragracing. The possible closing of A.I.R was on the news and the only reason they gave was because of public liability. There is minimal support for A.I.R but the state government semmed interested which is a good thing. Hopefully they upgrade the facilities and the track.

GOOD NEWS WANNA!!!
I just spoke to Peter Milsom , promoter of A.I.R.
The track is DEFINETELY not closing anytime soon as the a.m.r.s. starts there next week , nostalgia drags in a few months and a press release will be done soon stating that...
A.I.R. has cancelled some events (trackdays , clubdrives etc no biggies)but are still very open and running.
If ya wanna (no pun there) find out more , i'll be seeing Peter in 17 days in Newcastle so i'll get the full lowdown on the future of the track.

Yeah for sure as Peter is dealing with hundreds of calls and e-mails everyday about this. Man , rumours can sometimes ruin a reputation and for the sake of A.I.R. and it's employees , I really hope they come out of this , jobs intact.
I'll keep you informed.
