Is fabricating an engine a hugely expensive operation?? I mean in most forms of motorsports you see the chassis being created by really tiny companies and the engine or well at least the engine block being provided by giant car companiies( although it may be finally tuned and prepared by specialized engine builders- agin tiny undertakings). Only one exception comes to mind and that's the Judd Engines. Cosworth is owned by Ford right?? (or used to be before being bought by Champ Car?)

it's a saying that engine setup is the easy part of racing. while chassis and suspension setup is the hard part. you can go to any number of places and have an engine built. but you'd rather have a small team, or single person set up the chassis or suspension. that'll be more time consuming and consequentially, more expensive.

What kind of engine? Our 434 small block that we were running cost about 20 grand not including the tranny and clutch, that was another 10 grand. We ran that engine for 3 seasons without breaking a part and believe me I drive hard down the track. That's the reason why it cost so much. If you want something that's going to last you need to spend the money to ge good parts.

why can't small companies manufacture the engine block itself??

depends of what kind of engine your talking about. if it's an engine that really doesn't have any aftermaket support than a small company would have to do theresevles. but if it's an engine that's already been done to death(chevy 350's, ford 302's, etc.) than it'll be cheaper just to buy from another company. and because of market competition you know your going to get a good product from a reputable company.
