I tried to find a similar thread to this one but i couldn;t so forgive if done before.
Who would be in your Top 3 racing drivers of all-time?
If thats too easy also say who u reckon would be the best overall driver of all-time - by that i mean what driver would perform the best overall in all sorts of racing- rally, F1 , NASCAR etc.
I will post mines after some careful consideration!

There hasn't been a thread on this in a while, so I say goforit.
-----
#1 Anthony Joseph Foyt Jr (A.J.): The first 4-time winner of the Indy 500 found the time to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 24 Hours of Daytona, and the Daytona 500. They didn't call him Super Tex for nothing.
#2 James Clark Jr., OBE (Jimmy): The 1963 and 1965 F1 Champion skipped Monaco the latter year to win the Indy 500 in his Lotus 38 GP car; the first MR car to do so. He was able to adapt to a race car so well; he rarely asked for changes. His opponents were in awe of him. 20 years after his death at a Hockenheim F2 race 4/7/68; Goodyear tire engineers stated he was the only driver able to finish a practice/test session or a race with all 4 tires worn exactly the same amount. RIP.
#3 Sir John Young Stewart, MBE (Jackie): The 1969, 1971, and 1973 F1 Champion won with 3 different chassis, all Cosworth powered. His 1969 Championship in a Matra was the first for a French chassis and the only one until Alonso 36 years later. He was an incredibly smooth driver at the dawn of abusive (more=better) aerodynamics. He had standing offers to drive almost a decade after he retired at age 34 with 27 wins in 99 GP starts.
I thought about Mario, Senna, and Shumi; but I would have to put Hans Joachim Stuck ahead of them in versatility.

In my opinion the best racing drivers (at least for F1) are :
1- Juan Manuel Fangio
2- Airton Senna
3- Michael Schumacher
and that's all from what I know about racing history...

1.Walter Rohrl
2.Fangio
3.Kristensen
Overall i think the best driver on all sorts of races would be Sebastian Loeb- quick on all surfaces and rally drivers adapt easily to other forms of racing as proved by Loeb.
Weird how i didn;t mention Schumacher but i think some of his wins were down to the car in some cases but iam not taking anything away from him - he is def one of the best drivers ever!
Tom Kristensen
Jun 06, 2006, 9:21 AM
Well, I could just say Biela/Kristensen/Pirro and the red Audi, but that would be too easy, and wrong.
1. John Nielsen - He flew 312 meters on Mulsanne in 1985. Won in 1990, is driver and team director of a Zeytek team which is in top five in Le Mans this year. And he was test driver in the development of the Bohgatty Vairon.
2. Tom kristensen - seven Le Mans victories, six of which have been consecutive. "It's probably mostly the car."
3. Fernando Alonso - Bah... he's 25 and already pwning the best.
As for the best overall driver of all time. I'll say Jacky Ickx. He won a Formula 1 world championship, he won Paris-Dakar and he won Le Mans six times in a time where the drivers hadn't got any electronics to help them.

It's Ayrton, not Airton.
And he's my choice too.
Jacol
Jun 06, 2006, 1:25 PM
I'll say Jacky Ickx. He won a Formula 1 world championship,
He didn't, he was twice second in the championship.
And about the best driver it's too hard for me to name even three drivers because imo there was many more great drivers competing in differnet forms of motorsport and it's very hard to compare their achievements.

Jun 06, 2006, 1:39 PM
I don't think you can have a "best" driver because of the reasons stated by Jacol
You can't really judge the best, because all have used different cars etc.
I mean you get Nuvolari who is so dedicated to racing that when his seat fell off he bought a bag of oranges to sit on (true story).
Drivers now would never do that so it's hard to tell lol

I have the most respect for rally drivers, they have to contrinually adapt to the surfaces and obsticals they come across whereas virtually every other form of motorsport has a uniform surface.
My fav rally driver is Tommi Makinen

Drag racing is the only one where I could have a valid opinion.
Pro Stock - Bob Glidden
Funny Car - John Force
Rail - Dick LaHaie

Rally - Definately Colin McRae, no rally driver can touch him, he's the best.
Formula 1 - Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost or Michael Schumacher

F1 - Mansell, Senna, M.Schumacher

I have to echo Tom K's praise (except championship) of Jacky Ickx. He was the quintessential endurance driver. His team manager/crew chief at LeMans would tell him the pace he wanted. Ickx would go out and cut 20-30 laps within 0.5 seconds of that time..., at night in the rain!
Loeb looks sooo calm while he's flyin'!
Dale Earnhardt was an icon. Friends (recently moved from "across the road") with a black and white spare bedroom packed with collectibles quit watching NASCAR. They stated they never understood Elvis fixation until Dale died. He was larger than life.

I believe the 1967 LeMans winners to be the aforementioned A.J. Foyt and Daniel Sexton Gurney.
Dan Gurney retired early 70's..., when he could count 50 names of dead racing drivers he knew.

IMO its a toss-up among "The King", "The Silver Fox", and "Awesome Bill From Dawsonville" (and sometimes Rusty Wallace)
Not only can these guys drive and race their harts out, they can build what they drove...with their bare hands.

My number one all time favorite driver has to be Ayrton Senna. I just can't help it. I know a lot of you like him because he was so great, but I like him for his sheer ferocity. He was just a maniac behind the wheel, and all he wanted to do was win. I really admire his determination, even though he was a tad cocky. But that amazing animalistic drive whilest he was piloting his car was unmatched. He really slipped into another realm. He didn't just go into "the zone". He became a instense, bone-crushing animal.
My second favorite driver would probably be Max Papis for the same reason. Maybe it has something to do with Latino drivers, but they're just so intense. He's got a great talent, and he's really going to go places.
My third would have to be the late, great Gerry Marshall. Boy, was this guy a character. Not only was he the best road course racer ever in the history of road courses (over 600 wins), he was quite the drinker, too. This was a guy you could really go to the pub with and and talk to. He was far from the uptight, snobby Euro-trash racers of the modern era. He was basically a great guy. He had a very keen driving style, throwing any car he was driving into corners and peeling out of them. However, he did it with intelligence and and foresight, which is very uncommon. He drove on the edge, but it was sane motoring. He died last year I believe testing some Camaro at Silerstone. He passed while driving due to some heart condition. Being the gentleman racer he is, he had the decency to turn off every switch in the car, including the fuel pump and headlights.
God damn, what a guy. Forget what I said in the first part, Gerry Marshall is my favorite driver of all time. He combined good-will and talent at the same time. Ayrton and Max couldn't match how cool this guy was. I was also considering Marco Andretti, the extremely talented Italian rookie, and Roberto Ascari, the all around good guy genius who lost his life in 1955. There are many, many more, but those are my top three.
There is not clear cut greatest drive but i would have to say shumy,Tom K. Loeb, makki and Mario Andretti cause he accomplished alot from indy to F1

Ayrton Senna.
He was a great driver and a very motovationol (spelling) person.
One quote by him I will always remember is
Being second is to be the first of the losers.
And he is the only one I can remember because my memeory stuffed up again.

They did race each other. In my opinion, Senna was better. However, at the time, Senna had a better car and team, so who knows.
