Peugeot held a press conference in the Old Museum at the Le Mans circuit to announce their latest assault on the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The manufacturer, which took back-to-back victories in 1992 and 1993 with the 905 Group C car, will return in 2007, and is targeting outright victory in 2008.

Introduced by Christian Peugeot, Technical Manager Bruno Famin presented the men behind the new Peugeot LeMans engine: Jean-Pierre Nicolas, director of Peugeot Sport from May 2005, who will retire in September of this year, and engine specialist Claude Billois, most famous for the Peugeot 205 T16 turbo engine.

The new engine is a 100-degree V12 high pressure diesel injection (HDi in Peugeot terminology) with a capacity of 5.5 litres.

Rated at 700 bhp and producing an enormous amount of torque (1200 Nm = 885 foot-pounds = 10,620 inch-pounds),the new engine should run with virtually no smoke emission due to a diesel particulate filter system.

The decisions which led to this kind of engine specs are quite logical. By using the maximum capacity allowed by ACO regulations, the engine can be run effectively even without tuning it to the maximum, while offering the possibility of greater power in the future.

Because Peugeot reversed the usual cycle of developing new technologies in race cars first, then transferring them to production cars, it was desirable to have the bore of the racing engine as close as possible to that of the production diesel. To keep the stroke as short as possible 12 cylinders were called for. The 100-degree configuration was employed to provide the best compromise between structural rigidity and a low centre of gravity.

The weight of the engine has not been disclosed so far, and to date, only its components have been tested. Full engine tests are scheduled for September of this year and the first running tests in December, the latter to be conducted by Eric Helary.

Pioneers in diesel particulate filter systems (introducing this technology as early as 2000)and keen to contribute to the preservation of the environment, Peugeot have employed DPFS on their race engine.

The new car, to be called the Peugeot 908, will be presented at the Mondial de l`Auto in Paris. No final decision has been taken as to whether the car will be a closed or open racer, but the chassis will be an "in house" production of Peugeot Sport.

Several test races will be contested, probably including Sebring. As the WR team, run by Gerard Welter, have announced a Bio-Diesel contender for 2008, Peugeot were asked whether Peugeot will only say they are also investigating the possible use of Bio-Diesel.

The objective for Peugeot is clear: Gain a maximum of information and knowlege in 2007 then go for the outright victory in Le Mans in 2008, even if that means not being the first diesel to win LM but "only" to beat the adversary, who might have done it before them.

"That`s what Motorsport is about" said Bruno Famin.

Two cars will probably be entered in 2007, and no decision has been taken concerning potential drivers. There will probably be about 2 or 3 French drivers in all, but no names have been disclosed at this time."Targeting outright victory in 2008" might just a nice way of saying that ACO will help them, since Peugeot is their absolute favourite. But if they screw up with the reliabilty, they might get owned by... others (read that as Audi).

Too bad it came out 1 year late, it can't compete w/ the R10 this year.....

Peugeot: Le Mans Endurance Series: A V12 HDi DPFS for the Peugeot 908
On 14 June 2005, Peugeot announced its decision to take up a new technological challenge: to win one of the most prestigious and most demanding motor races in the world, the Le Mans 24 Hours, with a car powered by an HDi diesel engine, equipped with a diesel particulate filter system. This symbolic race, with attracts more than 200.000 spectators every year, will be used by Peugeot as an opportunity to showcase their brand values: reliability, dynamic performance, style illustrated by the feline lines and, finally, innovation expressed, amongst other means, by the use of environmentally friendly technology.

Why will Peugeot be at Le Mans with a diesel engine?

The PSA Peugeot Citroën group is today a world leader in diesel technology. "Common rail direct injection" HDi technology can be found on more than 60% of vehicles sold by the brand in Europe in 2005 and more than 70% in France. In 2000, Peugeot confirmed its commitment and strategic policy to reduce exhaust emissions, by fitting as standard equipment on the HDi engine in the 607 a diesel particulate filter system. In December 2005, Peugeot celebrated the production of the millionth vehicle fitted with a diesel particulate filter system.

Today, it is the production car which brings its HDi diesel particulate filter technology to the competition arena, in order to show its qualities in extreme conditions of endurance and performance, all the while respecting the environment.

The Peugeot HDi diesel DPFS

The choice of engine architecture has been based on a 100° twelve-cylinder V design, with a 5.5 litre cylinder capacity. This is the maximum cylinder capacity that regulations allow and was chosen for it efficient operation at low speed. It also enables engine power to be limited in the first instance, but also enables further development. The number of cylinders results, on the one hand, from the wish to keep bore diameter very close to that of a production series engine, in order to make best use of Peugeot's diesel combustion knowledge and, on the other hand, to limit the stroke to a reasonable value. The V12 architecture, well known for its good balance, also reduces vibration to a minimum.

The 100° V angle, of the V12 architecture, allows the height of the centre of gravity to be lowered without affecting the torsional rigidity of the engine. Two diesel particulate filters are mounted at the end of each of the exhaust systems. Through technology which has come directly from production cars, they will provide a guaranteed control of exhaust emissions under all operating conditions. The two diesel particulate filters fitted to the engine being presented, carry the numbers 1.195.520 and 1.195.521 which are the numeric production numbers of the filters in the overall production total of all filters since the introduction on to Peugeot vehicles.

The level of performance expected - more than 515kW (700 bhp) of power and a torque output greater than 1.200 Nm - is without precedent in a diesel engine and is a direct result of Peugeot's current level of know-how in diesel technology, linked to the mechanical characteristics of the V12.

Bosch is one of Peugeot Sport's essential partners on this project, making an active contribution to the specification of the fuel injection components and to the engine management system.

Peugeot Sport's engine department

With the arrival of this new challenge, Peugeot Sport was re-organised at the end of the 2005 World Rally Championship. Claude Guillois, under the supervision of technical manager Bruno Famin, was named as manager of the engine department thanks to his experience of race engines, supercharged engines and knowledge of production engine design. The department is based at Peugeot Sport's Vélizy facility, which includes three engine test beds, including one for simulation.

The next important dates

- 28 September 2006: presentation of the scale model at the Paris Motor Show.
- 30 September 2006: Peugeot V12 HDi DPFS engine to be run on engine test bed.
- Beginning December 2006: first drive of the car by test driver Éric Hélary.

In addition to Peugeot's three main technical partners, Total, Michelin and Bosch, Eurodatacar will be working with them on the Le Mans Series programme.

EDIT

Read this:
Today Peugeot announced details of their upcoming LMP project. The car will be called the Peugeot 908 and it will be powered by a 5.5 liter turbo-diesel V12. The Peugeot V12 HDi DPFS engine has a 100° cylinder angle to maximize center of gravity reductions while still maintaining good torsional rigidity. Peugeot claims 700 hp and 885 lb-ft of torque from the V12, a bit more than the quoted numbers for the Audi R10 (650 and 811 respectively). That should lend further credibility to the thought that the Peugeot 908 will be closed top (and therefore air conditioned, and therefore running a larger diameter engine inlet restrictor).

Then read this:

Then make some simple connections and you'll get an idea about how this car will own everybody - including the Audi's.

My god that sounds like a beast of an engine. Thougj it will sound horrible.
By what you said there it looks like Pug will have the best car on the grid. And with ACO favouring French teams I don't think anyone stands a chance unless something goes really really wrong.

Sorry I took so long to post and see this thread.
