For the past decade, the top-dog prototypes at Le Mans have been ... predictable. And that is no fun. Of course, there have been those occasional surprises, like the Bentley Speed 8, the Porsche 911 GT1, and the F1 GTR. Pescarolo gives Audi good runs for their money but I want to see more diversity more entrants that would really challenge the status quo.
One huge improvement would be if Japan came back. Although that seems unlikely as their historical Mazdaspeed 787B was basically banned for being too dominant. Sure, Toyota tried their luck with the GT-ONE but now sees more profit in Formula One.
If only someone in these giant auto companies would see the true spirit of motorsport as being more than a profit opportunity but a history making opportunity.
Another great entrant would be an American company. Did Ford forget that Bruce McLaren and Ickx drove their GT40 to win at Le Mans?
What's really bothersome is the lack of presence of Ferrari, Mercedes, and Alfa Romeo! But I guess there are better and cheaper places to make money these days....

Japan would benefit the most from flexing their muscles at such events such as Le Mans.

i think gm should also try it out, more so than just the vette. (yes i know they dont have the money) but they need to expand to new horisons. they are being waay too conservative in their actions, in making only "decent" cars not good ones.
and just b/c im byast i think dodge should be in there too.. it would be interesting to see the body design and what engine they would use

The rotary was never banned, ACO simply made it uncompetitive in order to favour the French Peugeot teams.
Well, if we are gonna trust the 2010 rules, then the P1 grid will be reserverd for major automobile manufacturers, which means that all we need is a little patience. I'd like to see Mercedes, Nissan, Jaguar, Porsche, Bentley, Toyota etc. to return to Le Mans. Basically I want to see alot of manufacturers to use prototype racing as a way of developtment. E.g tech transfering for road cars and marketing strategy for the whole company etc., like they used to do.
I don't want to see Peugeot, although they will be there next year. It will end up in... Well, ACO will get high on patriotism and start doing weird things.

The problem is that a lot of people just don't take Le Mans seriously anymore...

Seeing more japanese manufacturers would be great indeed and also some form of involvement by Mercedes and Opel would be nice.
I'm not sure if the VW concern should have a second competitor in there but usually, the more the merrier.

Dodge should send the Vipers back to Lemans.
They dominated endurance racing in the late 1990s. It would be good to see them back in action.

I want to see Porsche re-enter LMP1 and see if they can recreate the glory days.

Would anyone be shocked to learn that Audi's R10 development budget amounted to 30-60% of the total budget of the entire '06 LeMans field?
LeMans is run by the ACO. They are erratic, mercurial, unpredictable, and French. Would YOU bet 7-9 figures of your carmakers' money on 1 race when the ACO could screw you with a rule change on a whim? Most carmakers don't. Single factory races suck. Sue me.
As famous/traditional as LeMans may be; it is small potatoes next to F1.
Porsche's ALMS P2 experiment may prove fruitful. They learn faster...

^^^Good point you mentioned there Steve. Car makers are businesses after all, and F1 definitely brings in tons more dough than Le Mans. It's only alive probably due to historical reasons.
I guess Audi either has been raking in big bucks from Le Mans in the recent past or they've got some backdoor wheelin' and dealin' with the ACO, lol.
