The Grand-Am Rolex Series EMCO Gears Classic at Mid-Ohio was marred by a frightening accident involving GT class leader Joey Hand and rival Paul Edwards in the closing stages.

ahh, the marvels of modern day motorsports safety. "But right now, all I've got is a badly-bruised right elbow and really sore back and neck, left foot, right groin and things like that hurt." i think it really says something if you can walk away from that saying "some things hurt".

That was what got me confuzzled as well.
I mean, the groin is the area in the middle right?
And teh groin defines some parts like testicles and related stuff so why didn't he save us all the confusion and just say his right nut hurts?

ok... that's just stupid, why would you have a ramp in the grass? the car went damn high even with all the down force on it

Yeah that berm is the problem. It looks like some idiot put it there to keep rainwater from crossing that other track section or roadway next to it!! I mean, that was just stupid!
But fortunately, the driver came out of it well. Thanks to much safer cars and restraints!

Here's the world record for flips in a racing accident...don't worry the driver (literally) walked away...
Calder Park Thunderdome in Melbourne Australia...where stock cars go clockwise. Good ol AUSCAR.

Here's the world record for flips in a racing accident...I'm not trying to argue with you but who told you that? You guys don't watch much drag racing do you? :D When a car hits a wall and starts doing flips at over 300 mph, it does quite a few somersaults! lol
damn he is lucky he could get out of that one...Actually, if you watch the video close, the cockpit never hit the ground until the car came to a rest at the wall... He just went for a rollercoaster ride!

Told me? it was on ripley's. The most consecutive flips in a full bodied race car documented. there hasnt been another documented in this way so i say this is the record lol.
yeah drag cars flip over and over but i cant ever remember seeing one flip over 9 times. darrell alderman flipped 7 and a half and joe polito (aussie legend) did 8 in his ford probe pro stock. melanie troxel did flip a top fueler 17 times but that is not a full bodied car. besides , when top fuelers or any rail for that matter get on their side at that speed , they're gonna start to roll.
I'm also a full time Western Sydney International Dragway official...I see plenty of action...and crashes. I'm a rubber sweeper...best job (besides racing) at a dragstrip. I don't need to 'watch' (tv) alot of drags cause I'm always only 2 feet away from the cars!!!
But yeah I agree...what a hell of a rollercoaster ride!!!

I posted about this crash Monday; kudos to Vick for finding the video!
Vicksupra; I understood that said berm was part of a "driving school" course. If the "student" needs positive camber/banking in that turn...; it ain't much of a damn school!
SCCA stupidity took the runoffs to Mid-O 12 years ago to race in rain & snow (in SEPTEMBER!). Maybe this track design stupidity contributed to the runoffs moving to Heartland KS next year.
wesleypipes; Ripley's knows beer drinkin' and hotdog eatin'; but they don't know Jacques Merde/Jack Schiite about cars!. Only a certifiable DA quotes them on this forum. Get wise or be judged forever stupid! Deal.

After reading other posts; it is obvious you are not a DA, wesleypipes. Mybad. I am honored to have a smartass remark used as a sig. ;)
Seriously; quoting Ripley's on automotive matters is like quoting Paris Hilton on most beautiful woman. :-k
More seriously (and on subject); flippee Joey Hand got a great jump at the start and led GT2 for a number of laps at the Lime Rock ALMS race Saturday before finishing 3rd in the PTG BMW M3 GTR. He seems to be OK. This was co-driver Bill Auberlen's 303rd professional race start and his 174th in a BMW.

You know they were probably going really fast cause at slower speeds on that ramp the car would've just nose dived straight into the floor.

Are you an Olympic diving judge, Bofomills? For racing purposes; "nose dived straight into the floor" is pretty much what he did.
The credit goes to PTG's car construction. Not everyone is so lucky...

That's always sad. RIP.
It says Turn 5 - I wonder if they went up to the wall - it's easy to do there....

He continued to flip afterwards. At slower speeds he would of just hit the front end pretty nice and landed back down..

"I wonder if they went up to the wall - it's easy to do there..."
I wonder if bike racers like old-fashioned tires after grass better than asphalt hump(s), then gravel, then pavement, then concrete barricade...
To my knowledge; the first racing fatality at Rd ATL was a 69-year-old bike racer who crashed approaching the bridge. Post mortem determined heart attack. He got scared to death!
