I was at the dragstrip last saturday, enjoying the different cars racing, when this 1996 Ford Explorer pulled up to the line. It was raised up like 16 inches off the ground, had big drag tires, and sounded great!
The driver did his big burnout and then lined up (with a Mustang). The lights went green, and the Explorer roared off the line so hard it lifted it's front tires a bit! Then there was a loud BOOM,,, and the whole driveshaft blew out in pieces! A chunk of metal flew by me and hit my friend in the leg! (Finders Keepers!!!):D :D :D

It took the crews 20 min to clean up all the mess in the strip! Wish I had the camerah!

Anyone else have funny stories from the track?

I can tell you don't drag race. This is in no way funny. Someone could've gotten hurt. Would you think it was funny if you were the one that had to pay to fix it? Exactly. Funny track stories? Damn man, you amaze me...

damn, that sucks. I've seen a 69 camaro and another older GMC truck do the exact same thing, both shredded the driveshaft to pieces.

edit: yeah monkeyfkker is right, it won't be so funny if a piece of metal shot into your eye....

Even the owner of the truck thaught it was a joke. He got out and held part of the driveshaft up to the crowd laughing. His friends were sitting next to us and thaught it was great!

If someone got hurt,,, I wouldn't be posting it here,, but no-one did.

Whatever, he won't be laughing when he's writing the checks... I grew up in the pits at OCIR and after it closed, Terminal Island and LACR. It's NEVER funny when a car breaks on the track. There are too many negative aspects. Once you go out and do it yourself you'll understand!

Yeah good point. Well at least the driver had a good sence of humor.

Yeah, a good driver will have a sense of humor for the crowd. I didn't mean to be harsh DSM I can see where you'd think it was funny. It's just that I've been there and it's painful to the checking account! lol

That would suck. But I guess if the driver had a sense of humour it's not as bad. People can get hurt, hopefully he learns from that.

*Checks google to see if it is what I though it was*

I don't know, I always thought a car like this would be a 4x4.

I have quite a few but my favorite moments were when my car went from a 14.3 second car to mid 12's on street rubber over a 4-day weekend of work. Before that in Killeen (TX) my car was LS1 food.

It originally had a mild 5.0 typical exhaust burble, with the new configuration (Ported, polished and port matched 93 Cobra upper and lower, Ported, port matched and lightly polished E7TE factory heads, BBK Unequal Length Headers, Mac O/R X-pipe, Mac 2 1/2" Cat-Back, Lunati #LUN14017 Cam, No Emissions, FRPP Aluminum Driveshaft, FRPP 3.73's, Southside Machine Upper Control Arms, LRS Smog Pump and AC Eliminator with Power Steering Relocation, and thats just that weekend on top of a few more bolt-ons already in place.)

Next time I took it to the track some idiot pulled up next to me in a 2000'ish Civic that did in fact have some sort of Turbo kit on it, and of course the obligatory Wing by Boeing on the back. I was left lane (Fast Lane bah duurr) with the car shut off, he pulled up next to me and gave this smug look like he was going to rip me apart, coupled with a "Whats up dog?". Lanes started moving when the crew was done with the interim prepping of the track, so I cranked it over. When I did the guy shifted his eyes towards my car. I think he knew he screwed up.

He was emberassed and left Little-River Temple Academy Dragway.

Next car was a LT1 Camaro with exhaust on it, not sure if it had much done to it other than that. This was good because when I got back one of my buddies came over and told me they were talking huge amounts of trash about how the Camaro was going to smoke me.

He told me they were like "Oh SH&%", as soon as I left the line.

That pass was a 12.3@114 with a 2.0 short time (On Goodyear Eager 225/55R16's!! http://ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/details.pl?ID=froogle&typ=R-109497&Country=US).

The Camaro pulled a high 13. I cant remember if it was a 13.7, 13.8, or 13.9.

I just like the little side drama on the track. Its great lol.

One time last summer I was at the Woodburn Dragstrip, and they had a short delay cause there was a deer running down the strip, it had about a 5.0 min. 1/4 mile. The deer eventually jumped over the wall and left, (someone probally shot it after that, but I'm not sure.)
I've seen the same thing with jack rabbits too.
