I would watch the A1 GP but for two reasons:
1) British people aren't winning races regularly.
2) Never shown on any channels that you don't have to pay a riduculous amount of money for.
It seems like a good sport, with cheap entry fees and lots of overtaking, a shame that I can't see any of it!
BTW who won the series last year?

You know what, for all of the hype that A1 GP created before its maiden race at the start of the season, it hasnt lived up to any of it. People were comparing it to a country vs country version of F1, which as time has told it hasnt been that great.
The tracks that half of the races were held were below par and the quality of competition wasnt there.
I have no interest in this sport anymore.

I don't really care, it would be nice for it to stay, but as wanna mentioned it hasn't created all the hype that it was supposed to, and they don't put the cars on any well known tracks, and they don't televise it on any channels, so it's really their own fault that it hasn't been as successful as planned because they haven't put the effort into it as they should, they thought it would become a worldwide motorsport that was interesting all by itself, but it needs better advertising and better drivers to become a proper dog eat dog sport.
Some people were saying that A1 could be the sport that could shake up F1, but so far absolutely nothing has happened, it can't touch F1.

its been compared to gp2 more rather than f1
bennyboy
Jul 22, 2006, 11:29 AM
Yeah, but I think even GP2 is better because they have ex-F1 drivers in it like Timo Glock and Giorgio Pantano, and they have strong links with F1, with Giancarlo Fisichella running a team and the son of Jean Todt, Nicolas Todt, running an F1 team too.
Also, GP2 is shown on TV channels aswell and is advertised a lot, but A1 isn't really, so next season A1 needs to pull up it's socks and get working on making it more racey and better advertised so people know about it.

The problems I found with the sport were:
1) Advertising, there was minimal advertising for the sport.
2) Tracks used, they are not main tracks capable of attracting large crowds.
3) Driver quality, lets face it the drivers used were not the best.
4) Not much technical info given during the coverage of A1, something that I have always enjoyed when watching either touring cars or formula 1.
5) Lack of competition, There are a few countries dominating and considering the fact that the cars are all the same I fail to see why the other drivers are not as competitive.

Yep, those are the problems that are really affecting it.
Before the season began, I saw one televison advert for it on ITV, and it was never shown. Ever. Not even highlights.
Yes, the drivers were terrible. I hadn't even heard of the British drivers, not through any form of motorsport. Narain Karthikeyan, an ex-Jordan F1 driver was offered a job to drive for the Indian team. He declined, saying it was a step down from F1, and that he didn't want it to ruin his career. He now test drives for Williams. The better option of the two, don't we think?
From what I heard, none of the tracks were Internationl circuits, they were only national, like some of the tracks used were in Qatar, and, let's face it, don't exactly have motorsport in their blood. The only Qutarian in a top level in motorsport is one man who competes in a Group N Rally.
A1 needs a fresh start this year, and it needs to hope for the best.

My point exactly about the tracks, they were all domestic tracks and not widely recognised international tracks that would attract international publicity.
The Australian drivers were C-grade drivers in my opinion. The driver used for the most part of the season laps more than a second slower per lap in the touring cars.

More than a second slower......that's something that shouldn't be happening..... a two seater beating a single seater, when the single seater is more competitive.
I think the A1 was based purely on driver skill, what with all the car's specification being identical.
Judging by your posts, there must have been A1 coverage in Australia. What was it like? Did they have race build ups? Interviews with driver, team bosses, technical directors, etc?

The coverage I saw was quite poor.
My reasons being:
1) I had never heard of many of the drivers and a quick google search on many of them turned up nothing, therefore they are all new to me and I cant relate to any of them.
2) There was little to no technical info provided on the cars and the technology behind them.
3) Never saw an interview with the team bosses.
4) Minimal discussion on possible team strategies throughout the races.
5) Next to no race build ups, half of the time the network didnt even advertise that they were screening A1 and I would find it on by pure chance.

Well, since you've told me all of that I'm quite glad that none of the British TV channels televised A1, by the looks of things from your post above it looks as though the whole programme is a waste of time.
If A1 was meant to be the sport that was supposedly going to ''shake up F1'' well maybe they should take a leaf out of it's book, with interviews, better quality from the drivers, better advertising, more race build ups (the build ups in ITV's F1 is top notch, they even won an award for it), and there needs to be in A1 more technological insight and it needs to be simplified for the fans.
But then again, if the cars in A1 are built to an identical specification, there won't be an awful amount of technological insight for the fans and for the viewers, but at least they could make an effort and spice things up for a bit, because it's looking a bit under par from what I've heard.

I think the coverage in Australia is the main reason that you don't like A1. Point 2, 3 and 4 are very good in the coverage we get here.
And I dont really mind about the 1st point. I've been to many races where I didnt know any of the drivers, and it's still enjoyable to watch.
Anyway, I hope A1 does get better drivers, maybe some ex-F1 drivers like Verstappen. Then the action will get bigger, because overtaking seems relatively easy with those cars.
The idea behind the series is great, it just needs a final push to get very popular

I don't know, the first A1 was quite spectac, it was a good idea which hasn't really taken off yet, I guess. Also Sky sponsoring didn't help one bit. There's hope for it yet though, I think.

Then again, nor did any team!:p

If I were an ex-f1 driver the first thing on my ''to do'' list wouldn't be to go race in a series with a ton of rookies.....I would probably go to DTM like Mika Hakkinen.
Going to A1 would be slightly embarrassing IMO.

If you're into (European) motorsports you would have known quite alot of drivers.
Englands Robbie Kerr(don't think he has driven all the races) is already a known name on the European tracks.
There also were more ex-F1 drivers then Verstappen; Yoong, Enge and Firman, to name a few.

I saw a bit of a race once, at Laguna Seca I think. I found it boring.
What pisses me off is Switzerland says "no motorsport is to fast and scary for you country" and then they go and finish second place in A1.
On that note Switzerland would be the perfect place to hold the Euro GP.
