Schumacher retires in a blaze of glory

Michael Schumacher said farewell to the Ferrari faithful with an emotional victory in his final Italian Grand Prix before retirement...
...Ferrari took a three-point lead over champions Renault in the constructors' standings.Yet what happened on the track was entirely overshadowed by what followed the chequered flag, with the seven-times champion confirming that he would retire from racing at the end of the season next month.
Stepping from the red machine that has already powered him to six victories this season, Schumacher embraced and hugged his jubilant team mates starting with Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo. "At the end of this year, I've decided together with the team that I'm going to retire from racing," he told a news conference.
"All these years in Formula One have been amazing, especially those spent alongside my friends in the Scuderia (Ferrari)," he said.
"Soon my future will belong to my family, while I am happy to be still part of Ferrari. But for now, what matters is this world championship," said the German.
Finland's Kimi Raikkonen, the McLaren driver who followed the 37-year-old across the line in second place after starting from pole position, will step into the giant shoes of the departing great.
"I was really pleased to hear that he would be the person," said Schumacher.
Thoughts?

He is the best driver in the world... Even with the silly things he does. He can get away with it because its him. Wish him all the best...

It's he best thing that could have happened to F1 this year!!
I mean, it's healthy, for a start, people come, make their MILLIONS...{start that word with a B actually}...then they go.
Next year's F1 will be really good, we have Raikkonen, Alonso, Kubica, Red Bull's new car, Kovankein, Webber, Heidfeld, etc, we have loads of talented, fresh blood, why wait for Schumi 8-). It makes perfect sense to leave.

It's the end of an era!!!!
It sucks that Schumacher is retiring, I literally loved the way he drove, some of the moves he did were controversial, yes, but who cares?
He's a great driver and will be solely missed in the world of F1, to most people anyway.

Yeah as much as i don;t like the guy i have to take my hat off and say he is the best F1 driver of all time- i mean his stats say it all - he has claimed 1300+ pts in total whereas the next person down on the list is Alain prost with 700+. In fact there is too many records and pieces of history he holds but check it out on Wikipedia or something - its highly impressive!

He's had his moment, Raikkonen will have big shoes to fill for the next few years, even though he said he targets World Titles with Ferrari, but I don't think anybody in the next decade will come and beat Schumacher's records, because they were so amazing, so fantastic...
Shumi A great Driver, im going to miss him alot..F1 will not be the same without him...but the new age of drivers are come..and i hope Kimi can be the next shumi..or at least half of what michael was.

Kimi is a much more talented driver than the schumi of 2006, if the cars are the same relatively next year he is as good as WC, renault won't be super again until Heikki gets his legs into it, McLaren have a crap car, and that's about it. I really hope McLaren get it sorted next year and we can have a repeat of the 05 season, 2 young superstars at war! Also i've been hearing that ferrari let MS go not the other way round, pressure from marlboro apparently, after watching him give his speech it wouldn't surprise me, certainly didn't strike me as someone who wanted to go...probably just stupid rumors but he has had a lot of bad press in Italy this year, any thoughts?
RIP Brocky

First off I am the closest to crying than I have ever been for any driver that hadn't died. To me it feels like he has died.....thats how bad I will miss him. This past week has been horible. First Irwin died....then Brock died.....then Schumi announces retirement.....and to top it all off my Packers get shut out. So all in all I will miss the man....who perhaps will be remembered (thats right villynotsonew) as the greatest driver in F1 to ever live with Senna only being second because he died way too early to become what he could have been.
Anyways I think Ferrari wanted Schumi to hurry up and make the decision...and I'm sure they advised him that if Kimi comes next year team orders can't stay the same....also I'm sure they told him go out as a champion and not a looser. I know he is a racer...a pure racer at heart and he would race untill he was 60 if he could...but he saw that everything around him favored retirement...therefore making him leave.
He is going to leave a great legacy and other than Kimi.....I doubt i will watch anymore F1 next year...without Schumi...it doesn't interest me......I will miss Michael.....and I wish him a wonderful and fun-filled retirement.

it sucks to see him leave, but these last three races are gonna be his most exciting as he battles it out with fernando alonso now that there is only 2 points between them. But my God what a way to leave if he becomes the champ this year and becomes the 8 time world champ

I hope to hell he does become World CVhamp, but Alonso has said that he is ''110%'' certain of winning the title.
Does he even have a brain? He hasn't won since Canada in May and the momentum is obviously with Ferrari.
I think it will be an uphill struggle for Alonso to win the championship.

It was inevitable and at least he bowed out on a high. Part of me would like him to win the title this year but that part is swamped by the part that wants Alonso to spoil the party and win the title. Next years season is stacking up to be pretty dam good.

I actually came back today to talk about this. I haven't watched F1 in like a year but when I heard this I was all exited.
Schumacher: Great guy, great driver, great career, time to let someone take his place. I want him to leave on a high note. Maybe like, WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP? Yes, 2 points away, very possible. In fact, very surely going to happen.
Kimi: I always loved this guy. I think I even mentioned it before the start of this season. I wanted Kimi on Ferrari. I also wanted Culthard to be on his side but not everything in the world is perfect. He better fill Schumi's shoes good.
Masa: Needs to go to Red Bull or some crap. Not a Ferrari person.

anyone hear how Alonso lashed out at Schumacher
http://thestar.com.my/sports/story.asp?file=/2006/9/13/sports/15414659&sec=sports
Unsporting? Schumacher? Remarks like that, he is the unsporting one right now, just because he is going through a spot of bad luck he is taking it out on schumi and that aint right even though they are rivals

^^ I saw that!
Good for Alonso.
Schumacher deserves all he gets.
For a start no one apart from the FIA agreed on his penalty..it was ridiculous.
Schumacher is {only} Statistically the best ever driver.
Maybe some people should remember that.
The bottom line with F1 is advertising and money.
“In Formula One there are commercial and political interests”
Someone's sussed it :)

I think Alonso is gone to be honest, Skill for skill Shumi has alonso more than covered and the form/reliability is with Ferrari at the moment. I wouldnt be surprised if Alonso bows out of this years championship very quickly.

Quite right.
Never ever, ever the same.
He bought so much to the sport, Alonso's turned into a right old w*nker now, throwing his toys out of the pram, I used to look up to him now, but his childish behaviour has put him way, way down in my opinion.
Schumacher is the best, like it or not.
