While the RS Spyder is still completing the last races of its first full season, Porsche is already presenting the enhanced version of this racing prototype to the public at the Paris Motor Show (30 September – 15 October).
A quick review: Porsche returned to the ultimate class of racing sports cars, prototype racing, at the end of 2005 with the completely redesigned RS Spyder. Its objective: To continue its successful involvement in customer racing at a higher level. Thus the RS Spyder was designed according to the regulations for the so-called Le Mans Prototype Class 2 (LMP2) – with a view to being used by customer teams. This means that LMP racing sports cars can be entered in events such as the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), the European Le Mans Series (LMS) and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
In the first complete racing season in 2006, two Porsche RS Spyders are being raced exclusively by the American Penske Racing team and in the ALMS. Apart from superior class wins (LMP2), this light and agile Porsche RS Spyder also scored a sensational one-two victory on the winding Mid-Ohio race track in May, beating LMP1 prototypes despite their extra power on account of the regulation set out to their advantage.
For the 2007 season, in which the RS Spyder is expected to make its international debut with several customer teams, Porsche has enhanced the racing prototype from its R&D Centre in Weissach near Stuttgart.

It used to be beautiful. Why did they change the design that much!?
R.I.P 2006 RS Spyder. Your beautiful design will live on forever in our hearts and minds. Sports car racing is still enchanted by the light you brought to it.

Anyway, we knew it would be there in 2007. It was Audi's fault that they wasn't there in 2006 - they beat the R10's at Mid Ohio or wherever it was.

Well, they were always gonna change it sometime...
I suppose they have to contend with Peugeot now..

The '60s model was the best they ever made IMO.The 917K? That thing prawned. "Car of the Century at Le Mans." It was a good looker too.
The headlights on the 2007 RS Spyder are probably meant to resemble those of a 917, but unfortunately they made it look more like an old Courage C65 in my opinion.

The best IMO, was the 962 Dauer. Yes, it was a Porsche.

Oct 04, 2006, 5:46 PM
The 962 is from 1984. That's the greatest racing car ever, in my opium. Christ, it pwned at Le Mans for more than ten years, and won seven times. I really don't see why the 917 won the Car of the Century at Le Mans prize over the 962, but I'm not complaining because I judge books by their covers, and the 917 had some interesting paint jobs.
At Le Mans 2007, the Pugs will hopefully retire. The Audis will face problems and run at a relatively slow pace, and the RS Spyder will win. That'd be grade A ownage. I'd really like to see that. Audi and Porsche are sisters, so it will obviously have some consequences for Porsche, but what the hell!

There will be a handfull of worthy contenders other than the group you mentioned Tom. The Audi, Peugeot and Porsche are just the favourites, but when was the last time the Pugs, and Porsche won?

i saws the pics on tv during the Petit-LeMans. the car has 23hp more than the 06 Spyder. This means it has 503 and a max engine speed of around the 10,500rpms. weight is 1,709lb.

I hate the new design...the old one made it stand out from the crowd....not many even came close to its apperance......now it just looks like a Courage C65.

Porsche won in 1998 with the 911 GT1.
Porsche is the most successful marque in the history of Le Mans. They gotta live up to that, and maintain it. It's time for another victory!

WRONG! The Spyders beat a single R8 not two R10s at Mid Ohio... still impressive nonetheless. I enjoyed seeing the Spyders at Lime Rock hope the engine is still beasty and there are more of them next year
The 06 Spyders (uncharacteristically of Porsche) did not show that they had Endurance. I'm sure Porsche will fix the problems with the 07 Spyder, but if they don't perform well at Sebring I would not put money on them to win LeMans

No they didn't although one of the Spyders was something like 0.386 behind Pirro at the Salt Lake Grand Prix. Maybe that's what you're thinking?
Big TK fan eh? There's a rumor that Audi might make a youth movement in sportscar racing next year  hope it's not true I like seeing the usuals over here in the ALMS.
I do not think the 333SP is still racing, but there are rumors (I'm taking it with alot of salt) that Ferrari is building a LMP2 prototype. The rumor has no merrit, but that's why it's just a rumor. Same with the driver situation

Very true, the Spyders are able to keep up (relatively) with the R10s and other LMP1s in the ALMS because the tracks aren't long enough to show the P1 cars true legs. The Spyders are very quick on the tracks especially in braking. It's very evident that they don't accelerate as well as the P1s, but they clearly make it up in braking and cornering. However at a track like the good old 24 hour classic. I'd expect them to be faster than the other P2s (a few seconds) so maybe a high 30s time is possible for the Spyders

The Audi and the Peugeot are in the LMP1 class (925 kg (1982 lb) and 6000 cc for N/A engines or 4000 cc for supercharged or turbocharged engines.) The Porsche RS Spyder is in the LMP2 class (775 kg (1652 lb) and 3400 cc for N/A engines or 2000 cc for turbocharged or turbocharged engines.)
The RS Spyder is by far the best LMP2 car. It has great torque figures compared to 4 cylinder Lola that won Le Mans. It's definitely not gonna get slaughtered. It will be the slaughter!

Huh, What Ferrari? The 333SP? That was a WSC. I've never been crazy about WSC's. They were ugly and they replaced the Group C. I don't know about the regulations for that class. The Porsche would most likely beat it, but the 333SP can't compete in Le Mans anyhow. It would be great to see a Ferrari return to Le Mans though. Enzo would be proud!

And who are these AER guys anyway?? Are they the new COSWORTH?
I mean a few years from now they might actually supersede Ilmor and Cosworth and Cosworth is half dead anyway after losing their supplier status in F1 from next season. I hear massive job cuts on the way. even on top of the 40 percent previously announced after the engine freeze proposition was hammered out
