The allure of Formula One is simply too hard to resist for most successful car manufacturers. Latest rumours suggest that Nissan might be joining the ranks, and according to an article in French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche, the Japanese auto maker might do a deal with former team owner Alain Prost and be trackside as early as 2008.
Four time world champion Prost, whose own team was liquidated back in 2001, has reportedly been in talks with Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn about a possible joint venture. However, the only word coming out of Nissan is that F1 is “an option,” and an investment in a worldwide competition could prove more fruitful than the regional championships that company is currently involved with.
Key staff from Nissan have attended several major F1 events this season that, according to a company representative, were there to “observe, learn and understand the discipline’s finer details”. This follows from previous reports that suggested that the successful Renault team might simply change its name to Nissan, and also news that Korea’s Hyundai might also be joining F1 in the near future. Nissan would be a very worthwhile addition to the F1 scene - the company has had a long string of successful performance cars over the years, and a Nissan F1 team would go nicely with the launch of the all new GTR, Nissan’s most formidable sports car.

What are Nissan on about.... they can't join in 2008. It's the same with Hyundair, they're off their rockers. The 2008 teams have already been decided, and it will be quite a long time after that they can join. But I suppose they can't help thinking about it. But it will be tough for them to get in, but they may not get it at all.

Wow, I wonder who's next? Mitsubishi? Subaru? Mazda?

Too bad Mitsubishi quit formula racing long ago and switched to rally racing.....

I think it would be cool to see anther team on the grid. Why close off the thought of more people racing? Thats what its all about. Get as many people as you can to race, its more fun that way.

Woah, this is quite bad news actually. I was hoping they would be at Le Mans in 2010. But it's less likely to happen if they join F1.

Hyundai and Spyker is also joining. Somebody will have to leave F1 to make space for all these new teams.

Spyker was already on the grid 3/4 of the way through the season I thought.

Spyker were sort of of on the grid, they just owned the midland team, i think there coming back next year under the Spyker name.

Hyundai are aiming for formula 1 in 2010. If I'm not mistaken. Nissan however, won't have a chance for 2008 in my opinon. I think they will go to the old format where only the fastest cars get on the grid, the teams who can't even match them, dont even get to qualify. It was called pre-qualification i think.

New F1 regulations will see the expenditure of top teams sink from 300 Million dollars to just around 100 Million dollars. So F1 is becoming more cost effective with engine freeze and all other restrictive regs like standard ECU From Microsoft. Many more car mfrs will like to get in beacuse of the far lower cost involved. But make no mistake. F1 won't absorb more than 6 manufacturers at a single time. You may ask why??

Well no multi-billion mfr would like to be seen running at the back of the grid. And if they are uncompetitive for a while they would surely pull out no matter how cheap it is

for the three following years too many manufacturers are considering to join the F1 , i don't know if the F1 can handle such number of cars, there must some teams that are going to quit ........ But anyway , Hyundai and now Nissan ! they will do a very god step if they join the formula one world , it is a step to the future ... but i sometimes wonder , can Hyundai or Nissan afford the risks of getting to F1 ? i mean i have seen lots of teams and manufacturors that have joined F1 , they quit after couple of years of the joinig date , i mean it is not a simple game , there will be some inconveniences , But it is very competiteve to see those 2 Manufacturors taking that chance ...

Yeah, that's true. You have to big big bucks into F1 and if you're getting nowhere it's a lot of money down the drain. It's whether all these manufacturers are prepared to do that, and if they pull it off, well respect to them. A good example of this happening is Renault. When they started winning in 2005 their car sales rose 15%, which is a hell of a lot. If Nissan and Hyundai start getting successful then the cash will definitely start to flow.

If Nissan/Renault buy FORD; they will be so broke they will be lucky to put a sticker on a soapbox derby car...

I REALLY don't see this happening, remember that Renault and Nissan are one large company, and that Renault has spent several years rebuilding its F1 image. Renault is very successful now and it is one of their major marketing strategies. This is why i doubt a rebadging of Renault F1 to Nissan. I highly doubt a Nissan F1 Team unless Renault were after a dual team style system similar to the Red Bull/Torro Rosso team.
