I have been given my parents' 1996 red Jetta and would like to soup it up a bit. The problem is that I really don't know anything about cars, and my dad has lost interest in fixing them up... so I'm a beginner and completely on my own. I'm a college student with a fairly small budget, too. I talked to some of my guy friends who suggested that it might be really cool to lower the car a bit and get new rims, a spoiler, and possibly some window tinting. I'm open to suggestions and advice from everyone... what would look cool, where can I find it and how much will it cost?

Thanks!

Just one thing: go for performance upgrades, not visual stuff...

well, it being his car, i think he should do whatever he wants to do to it. to each his own, right?

but if you're gonna be going for all visual, try to keep it clean. :) i'm talking stock spoiler, no chrome rims, not slammed, etc. etc. you don't want to be considered the dreadful "ricer" term now, woudlja?

Go for an air-filter, cold air induction and a small cat-back exhaust jsut to start things off. Also, get a small bodykit, which just makes it seem awesome. Also, some rims could help. Maybe some new springs?

Nuespeed has some good stuff for VWs. If I had the money I would definately modify my 98 golf.
