Audi Sport’s head of engine technology Ulrich Baretzky, commented “We want to use the R10 programme to develop combustion technology for a future target for us in the VW Audi Group. That is to go a step beyond oil and gas based fuels. As soon as possible we would like to use Biomass to Liquid (BTL) fuel. That means that we will be using synthetic fuels made from renewable sources. The best part is that the transformation process can be CO2 neutral. All of the C02 absorbed by the plant is burned. That’s environmentally friendly motorsport and we hope to introduce BTL fuel in 2008.”

This is some exciting news. A true pioneer in "green motosports."

For 2008, Audi is planning to use the driver's sweat as fuel.

.. I think I should change my signature.. :)
Thats great.. but it will have less 10% power than diesel.

im not excieted about this. gasoline perfroms better, theres no beating around the bush. diesel gives great torque, but fro some reason deisels have a hardtime acclerating.

IF somehow its top speed and handiling and its drivers make up for this, thats great, but its best not to have to make up for soemthing right from the start.

if audi wins the Le Mans, the whole car world will be shocked then?

i think this was used in the R8 or something, maybe it was the R10, it may perform well, but mostly the Le Mans track is full of straights, so i dont think the torquey engine would quite help, as car buff said, diesels have hard time accelerating, dont know if its true, but it would affect the performance, would it?

put it this way, as far as accleration.

deisel drag racing cars, the ones that put up plumes of smoke darker than mindnight with no moon and a cloudy sky to cover the stars, the can get up to the same speeds as methanol drag racers.

but they do it about 3.4 seconds slower.

takes a diesel dragracing engine, with lots of money invested into it, about 7.5 seconds to do the quarter mile. some prostreets can do better.

I made a thread on this a while ago, but what the hell. I don't think they will be ready with a bio-diesel powered car before 2008, and I'm doubting they will use it unless ACO change the regulations to favour bio-ful cars because they have some disadvantages against ordinary diesel cars.

It's true that Audi would be fighting an up hill battle with a different type of fuel. Although I'm sure they could pull it off and make another wave in the automotive industry.

Maybe... but they will have a hell of a problem if ACO start trying to favour the Peugeots. They've always done that, so Audi is really screwed if they get power/fuel disadvantages and other mandated restrictions.

emison laws are already limiting performance cars......when factories that create far more emissons are left alone

Slightly off topic here, but I believe the reason Diesels do not accelerate as fast as petrol, is because they don't produce as much horsepower, but more torque. Having lot's of torque is what you need for good acceleration, but you need lots of horsepowers to create that torque. Hope that makes sense.

if we wanted an eco friendly racing society, lets begin racing Toyota Priuses!

Diesel cars accelerate faster than petrol cars because of the huge torque. Hell, qualifying tires won't even last a lap on a diesel car!

Good for them, they are doing their bit I guess...and if it's possilbe why not?

Nice experiment from Audi, it's good to see that they are a car company willing to take next generation technology into this generation's racing.

Last year, Audi used diesel, quite controversial with everyone else, but it won, and I can only think of one reason why it will be tough for Audi in Le Mans 2007.

Answer?

Peugeot's 907.

They probably won't do it before 2008, but the ACO has gotta favour the bio-diesel cars in some way. Audi will likely put a lot of pressure on the ACO to get less restrictions to make up for power/fuel disadvantages.
