From seeing that so many members on this site can spend hours posting in threads like “The Hot Girls Thread”, and looking up pictures and such all over the internet I decided to see if I could create a little side project that could harness some of that energy. The goal is to research and record laptimes for production cars at popular racetracks across the world. Why? Because it’s nice to have everything collected together, so it’s easy to browse, compare, and research.

What am I asking you guys to do? It’s simple really, just go look up laptimes and come back and post them here in this thread. Then I will edit the first post and file them under the appropriate track. There are a couple of rules that I am asking people to respect in this thread, to keep everything credible and fair.

1) Any time you post must have a legitimate source. Without a source, it is not valid. I get to decide what a legitimate source is and what isn’t. You must also be able to present a copy of said source to me. Examples of legitimate sources are magazine articles (they can be scans or links to the magazine’s webpage where a copy of the article is hosted), videos, newspaper articles, press releases from companies, etc. Things I won’t consider legitimate are other posts in forums across the internet, wikipedia, personal webpages, and other things of that nature.

2) The cars must be stock. For the same of comparison, I will only accept times that are stock. If there is interest we can also create a second list of modified laptimes, but for now we have to stick to stock times. Most magazine comparisons are by default stock times, and hence they do not need to say that explicitly. Other sources are variable, and I will have the say on if the time is valid or not.

3) We must know what the course was. I’m not just talking about the name of the racetrack but also the specific course. Many racetracks have multiple different courses, and they each are of varying difficulty and length. A good example would be Virginia International Raceway.

Here is a good sample for you guys, it’s the Car and Driver Lightning Lap 2007 Results, and it’s helpfully located on their website.

Mazdaspeed 3- 3:16.0
Mini Cooper S- 3:22.9

Drivers, date and other information are optional but highly preferable.

Here are some tips.

1) Save a copy of the source to your hard drive, or take a screenshot of it. Things on the internet tend to disappear. I know that once a source is presented to me that’s what I’ll be doing.

2) Look through car magazine websites at the archives of old articles, they often have times they had from comparisons in years past.

3) The infamous Nurburgring list that is hosted on another car forum is out. I had an argument with someone (not on this site) about that list and ended up checking the first hundred or so sources, most of them turned up bogus. That’s not to say you can’t use the list as a starting point to find sources for the Nurburgring though, I’m just saying you can’t use that forum’s list as a source.

So come on guys, won’t you help?

Ugh... Nor do yours? It doesn't matter, they're rough times.

After all, no sources will be 100% accurate anyway - all drivers have different abilities and skills!

I put some of the ones that were tested in the wet that I can remember off the top of my head.

EDIT: Also, conditions will NEVER be exactly the same, the same tyres wouldn't always be used and so on. 100% accuracy can't ever be achieved from differing sources...

But mine were all done one the same day by the same driver... None will be 100% accurate but we need to minimize the margin of error and those Top Gear times dont help with that...

Also the cars in my source are stock so they come with factory recommended tires which are the best and safest for achieving top times...it is hard with differing sources and TG make it even harder...

And you put wetness in word when this data should be mostly quantitative...whats the difference between 'wet' and 'extremely wet'. Is it like moisture in the air compared to driving in an ocean?

When you start a thread quoting whores to carmakers C&D, especially without driver names; I start a nap.I agree that most of the magazine get down on their knees to the high end car companies but the key here is getting a vast number of sources and occurrences so that that bias can be eliminated like a well done scientific study. It's not perfect though.

At a vintage race at Road Atlanta; I have seen Brian Redmond smoke a field of Can-Am, IMSA GTP, and Indy cars in a 2.0L Chevron B16 sports car. This in "retirement".

C/D magazine writer Pat Bedard teamed with Redmond to finish 3rd (-1 lap) in the 1984 spring GTP race at RD ATL in a Group 44 XJR-5 Jaguar.

Bedard qualified for the Indy 500 on his 2nd try and almost killed himself. He doesn't even race showroom stock anymore due to a "tear in his right brain hemisphere."

REAL race drivers sometimes write good articles/stories. Magazine writers rarely become REAL race drivers.

This US citizen doesn't miss "Top Gear". Jeremy Clarkson lowered my opinion of British motoring enthusiasts. Did they ever get a REAL race driver to demonstrate what a putz he is/was?

Well he didn't write that those are times from nordschleife so maybe from the nurburgring gp track or even from some variant of the gp track.

...

My. god.

CHECK THE FREAKING LINK.

It goes to the Car and Driver Article on the VIR course Bossesjoe originally posted, that's why those times look *so* familiar.

Do you know why he said it's the Nurburgring? Because he himself didn't check, and VIR is often called, "America's Nurburgring".

Honestly guys, you didn't look at the link. Come on...

still, as someone like me, i dont know that the Virginia international raceway was called the 'America's Nurburgring', he still has to state it correctly even if its the same time as what Bossesjoe has posted...

whatever...yes, i didnt look at the link, but i did look at the first post...

Well, that's fine, but still, it's a slang term, nobody will ever write it as "America's Nurburgring" in statement saying that's the tracks' name.

BTW, nice thread! =)

I've always used this site:
http://www.track-challenge.com/main_e.asp

If you do Single test there are some nice features, like G-Forces in what corner.

They list Hockenheim and Nürburgring

www.fastestlaps.com (http://www.fastestlaps.com) is a good site to check laptimes, lots of tracks plus 1/4 mile times and 0-200km/h far many cars.

Do you have the lap times from the tuned cars? I think that the record belongs to a S2000 with time under 1min.

Ok, before I start posting stuff, somebody straighten me out here.

What's all this talk about the Nurburgring? The only mention I made of the track was that people cannot use this list (http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?viewThread=y&gID=3&fID=0&tID=10073) as a source, as I've already checked a great deal of the entires and found them to be totally made up.

I belive that all this talk about nurburgring is caused by small misunderstanding related with the name of some track and the slang name of this track. I attached this list in my post in case anyone would be intrested in it, nobody is using this list as a source of information. If you wish i can remove it (if it's possible).

I'll try to look some of them up. The the only reason why I ask is that there are a lot of cars that get "boosts" every couple of years. The regular Corvette model just got an updated suspension this year and next year it's getting and extra thirty or so horsepower.

Laguna Seca track event on 4/20/07 (Can I put this in here for "real world" times using us amateur drivers. If out of place, delete if necessary). I'm in the list somewhere in General Class 7. About 50% of these cars are stock (or small modifications like brake pads/fluid). The rest are racecars, and they were there before an SCCA event that weekend practicing with us.
