just seen the BBC report and it says that 2 were on board the 'squirrel' helicopter when it crashed near colin mcraes house in lanark scotland.
there were no survivors, but interestingly there was no mention of the helicopter being colin mcraes, they only said it was near his house.

There is another thread on this matter but this will be more specific.
Colin Mcrae and His Son Johnny Mcrae have Both Died In A helicopter crash near his home in Lanarkshire, Scotland
http://www.motorsport.com/photos/wrc/2005/gb/editorial/wrc-2005-gb-xp-0227.jpg
Johnny Mcrae was just 5 years old :(:(:(:(
It happened at 4PM local time,The helicopter burst into flames on contact, though, making identification difficult.
The local police quickly sealed off the crash site but would only confirm that there were no survivors in the crash. The helicopter has been, however, confirmed to be a Eurocopter AS350B2 Squirrel registered to McRae.
According to McRae's agent, Jean-Eric Freudiger, McRae had been piloting the helicopter himself, and McRae's son Johnny, as well as another adult and child, were also aboard. However, McRae's wife Alison and nine-year-old daughter Hollie were not, according to family friends per Freudiger.
McRae has been recognized as an experienced helicopter pilot, and the 16th-century family home, Jervis House, is equipped with a helicopter landing pad.
McRae has been widely considered to be the most successful British rally driver ever, and the only one to date to win the coveted World Rally Championship title, in 1995.
In addition to the two British Rally Championship titles in the early 1990s, his active WRC career spanned from 1987 to 2003, primarily with the Subaru works team, with some one-off drives for Skoda and Kronos Citroen in 2005 and 2006.
In the meantime, he participated in two legendary but very different events -- the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Dakar Rally -- always with the total commitment so typical to McRae.
He was born to a rallying family, his father, Jimmy, having won the British Rally Championship title five times. His younger brother, Alister, has also enjoyed some success, including the 1995 British Rally Championship title.
More to follow as the situation develops ...
This is a sad sad day for all motorsport.....

I saw one person, an 11 year old boy in fact, type in the BoC ''my hero has gone forever''
It's the exact same for me, actually.
Also, my avatar was taken from the last time I actually got to see McRae in the WRC. It was taken in December 2005 in the Millennium Stadium. I was sitting near the finish line. It was the world first indoor rally stage, and when Colin came off the ramps the reception was unbelievable. The amount of noise everyone made was absolutely mind-boggling, my head physically hurt for those few minutes he skillfully slid and drifted that Fabia WRC around those corners. What a memory, what a man.

Exactly. If one flipped a rally car, would one be scared to death and stop, or will one keep going until the finish line? Colin chose to keep going, as if that flip didn't happen.
I'd be scared as sh1t, so I'd probably chicken out (unless I'm on a powerful energy drink, then I'd feel overconfident).....
