Last weekend, English supermodel, Jodie Kidd, finished on the podium for the first time in motor racing competition.
Kidd, an official Trofeo Maserati driver, was racing in the Trofeo Vodafone Maserati held at the Bologna Motorshow on 4 December. She was at the wheel of a Trofeo GranSport, a track car derived from the roadgoing GranSport. Racing against invited VIPs - among them the two Italian anchormen, Daniele Bossari and Fabrizio Frizzi - the model, nicknamed the ‘Queen of the Rain’ for her superb technique in unfavourable weather, was competing in only her third event. She alternated the drive with the FIA GT expert, Fabio Babini.
“It’s great to finally see women get into motorsport, and Jodie is so passionate about cars that she could become a perfect ambassador for it.
My best compliments to her and Fabio Babini for their excellent performance today”, declared Lapo Elkann, Fiat Auto Brand Manager, on congratulating Kidd on the win.
The model is the second woman to have claimed top spot in a Maserati. The first was Vicki Butler-Henderson, the famous British presenter of Fifth Gear, a motoring TV programme screened on Channel 5 in the UK. On 11 July, Butler-Henderson finished on the podium in the third race of the Trofeo Vodafone Maserati at Silverstone.
Maria Teresa De Filippis has an important place in Maserati history as she was the first ever woman to race in Formula 1 in a 250F. Back in the 1950s, she earned a number of excellent placings and even set a record in the Catania-Enna that remained unbeaten for three years. Still involved in the motor racing world, De Filippis is currently President of the Maserati Club.
