I have managed to ignore the Indy 500 for the last few years except to note that CART regs Penske came over and mopped ***. However, something interesting happened today.
5' 2", 100 lb., 23 year-old rookie Danica Patrick qualified 4th for the race in the #16 Rahal Letterman(yes, David!) Racing entry this afternoon. She's pissed that a first lap(of 4 timed) bobble held her to a 4-lap average of 227.004 mph. In morning practice, she set fastest lap of the month at 229.880 mph! It appears that the Saturday Power Bloc TV spokesbimbo can drive a race car.

I don't think a driver has died from injuries received in the race for over 30 years, but a few young hot shoes have bought the farm in practice since then. Road racers worry me at Indy. Their instinct to countersteer when the ass end comes out is suicidal at 220 mph. I hope Danica can keep survival in mind in only her 5th IRL start.
