Porsche is developing this new LMP2 car. They are already testing the car, and the first tests went very well. It uses a brand new 90 degree V8, specially developed for long distance races. The 3.4L engine developes 480Hp. The rest of the car is fully conform the ALMS rules.

Though, Porsche ain't gonna race the car. Other teams will be able to buy one. They have to wait untill 2007, because in 2006 only Penske Motorsport will get one. To end the test program, Penske will also use the car in the last two races of 2005(1 oct at Road Atlanta and 16 oct at Laguna Seca)

Indeed, especially since Audi is also developing a new LMP car(this is the last year the R8 is allowed to compete in the ALMS and Le Mans)

Aren't they in different classes? Isn't this in the P2 class, and the R8 is in the P1? I mean, look at the horsepower differences. This one has like, 480hp, and the audi has around 600hp. It wouldn't be a contest.

You're right Mopar. It's intentional, Porsche wanted to race in the lower prototype class because it's cheaper than LMP1 and that way they can sell a bunch of race cars to customers which is the way Porsche has always wanted it to be. Remember 1969 when they built 25 917 monsters ?? So now they will offer a GT and a Prototype turn key racer.
I think this is clever marketing !

Ah, I wasn't aware of the differences between LMP1 and 2.

I believe Porsche made 25 917's not for customers, but so they could run in a certian class. The rules required 25 homologation cars, and since Porsche had already made 25, they called them homologation cars. Pretty tricky. I'm not entirely sure that's the story, but I'm pretty sure it is.

Hey ! It's an old thread but it was just announced by ALMS that the drivers of the Porsche prototype for the last two races of this year will be factory hot shoes Sascha Maassen and Lucas Luhr. They won three GT championships together. The car will be called Porsche RS Spyder. And it's gonna surprise many, believe me...

Big hairy deal. The car will undoubtably stomp the 3-6 LMP2 cars that show up nowadays

Don't blame me for reopening an old thread.

Blame Porsche for putting this in the racing news. Sue me.

Tom Chilton broke a 5-year ALMS track record at Laguna Seca in the #15 Zytek Lola for the LMP1 pole.

Sascha Maassen qualified the #6 Penske Porsche LMP2/LM675 in 5th overall (behind both Dyson Lolas), between the (alledgedly all-conquering) LMP1 Audis. The spread over the 3 cars was .347 seconds.

I am devouring my plate of crow as I post.

http://www.americanlemans.com/News/Article.aspx?NewsID=1601

BTW,

A GT1 Saleen qualified 8th, .112 sec (with a P2 between) ahead of the Vettes. Astons start 12th & 13th.

REAL sports car racing fans (able to do so) will watch this race on SPEED TV 10/16 at 1:00 PM EDT Sunday.

Fans of kewl/racing/exotic cars who are pedestrians/have too short attention spans to understand racing need not clutter this thread further.

That's pretty impressive. Looks like Porsche did a great job with the car!:)

I did say, "if able". I do not object to talk of Aussie Supercars, even if Speed doesn't show them anymore. (Bathurst on Toca is maniacal!)

Superb race at Laguna Seca. Refreshing first win in the U.S. for the European Zytek team and flawless performance for the LMP2 Porsche. They will be serious contenders next year and it's good news for sportscar racing.

The Porsche left the rest of its class in the dust, I watched the race and the Porsche was fighting the LMP1 class cars for the overall win. It didn't get it but in won in it's class. It was a great race to watch.

Edit: I just looked at the overall standings and it had a better fastest lap then the #2 Audi!

I think the Porsche is going to be strong in ALMS, i would like to see them fight for the LMP1 but i guess we are going to have to deal wiht the LMP2.

Now that Porsche has there Prototype ..why dont they try making a F1 Team? i think even audi should, since its mostly pure manufactured teams...not alot of priviters

SteveFX

It was a great race. A 1:15 win margin and 6 cars inside 2 laps beats hell out of a 12 laps margin at Petit (especially since it was pre-ordained from the first turn!) The Porsche turned the 3rd fastest race lap (143/164, latest fast lap).

It's possible that Cpt. Penske is calling the shots on this "development" car. They may be sandbagging. A brand new Porsche w/480 hp may be capable of beating an old Audi R8 w/600 hp already! This would be a boost to customer car sales, except that it would kill the ALMS series.

-----

During the broadcast, there was commentary about a miraculous save in the dirt exiting turn 5. I have done so many times on Toca. After seeing the turn 1 fiasco involving GT cars, I felt better about some things I have tried on Forza.

it would be great to see the car next year, too bad it had to be yellow. yellow doesnt really go well with porsche imo. but thats what DHL's color is.

Once upon a time, Playboy's Playmate of the Year always won some kind of hot car painted "Playmate Pink." The standing joke upon sighting any sort of exotic/rarity was, "I'd drive it if it was playmate pink!."

A fast Porsche looks good in any color.
