View Full Version : Celica GTS Top Speed

Just got a new 2003 Celica GTS ( no modifications yet) a month ago and took it on the hwy. The thing topped out at 118 m/h and it sounded like it really struggled to get to that speed. Is there something wrong with my car or that's where they all top out? This seems a little too low for a sports model.

Actually, you've made a mistake. You shouldn't force a new car to reach a high speed. Up until about 1000 miles (1600 km) you should never get over 4000 rpm. The engine is new and needs to adapt to high revs and high speeds. If you don't do that, you might have problems with the engine later. Perhaps that's why you couldn't reach a high speed.
Didn't they tell you that when you bought the car? :?

The car had about 2000 miles on it when I took it over 100 m/h, so I think I was covered engine-wise... Still disappointing rusults :(

LOL then you might want to check with a specialist to find out what's wrong with the car!!

defenatly something wrong with the car !!
a golf 1.6 liters top speed is 195 km/h ... it reaches 205 with no problems ...
so i guess a celica should have a higher top speed !

Ok, so I searched for the test drive results and found a review that shows top speed at about 185km/hour which would be around 118 miles/hour. (Here's the link http://autos.en.msn.ca/vip/heraudspecs.aspx?make=toyota&model=celic a&src=404)
So, I wonder if we have a governor here-- although it really did not sound like it. I wonder if I can take the car back hehe.

Only 185 km/h??? It sounds strange to me....
On the other hand, a new Toyota couldn't have any malfunctions!

a celica gts should be going a hellofalot faster than that. an mr2 spyder has the same powerplant, but has a top of 128, and is 185 lbs lighter, but i don't think that could be enough weight to do anything critical

I had a 2000 celica gts 6 speed (do they make a 5 speed gts?) and it (STOCK) went up to the 140 area.sounds like theres something wrong....... :!:
OH by the way your using PREMIUM!! GAS arent you???? :?:

Yeah, the gas is premimum and the horses are 180... I first tried myself and then had a friend who is pretty serious recriational racer try to take it as fast as he could with no good results. You usually can feel when governor kicks in and limits the speed but this time it was different. I will be checking the chip -- might have to send it in!

..thats what you are going to have to do - go to your dealer and ask if he can help.
Are you in top gear, top revs when you get top speed or can you not get all they way?

Yep, everything was done as needed. I am hoping to find someone who has same generation GTS to get some input.

since the post was resurrected, i'll go ahead and fix this error. Celica GT, All Corollas and Matrixes (excl. XRs) and MR2 Spyder share the same powerplant, 1ZZFE - 130hp/130lb/ft torque. All have the same top speed with a governor of 118mph (methods around this are easily found by reading up on the MR2 or Celica boards).
Celica GTS, Corolla XRs and Matrix XRs, and Lotus Elise (US Spec) all share the same powerplant - 2ZZFE-180hp/130lb/ft torque for the toyotas and 190hp/150hp torque for the Lotus. Both engines are 1.8Ls.
