I rode some great roads in CA.

I rode the Angeles Crest Highway under a full moon. Uphill, the Mt. Wilson road was 5 miles of WOT/hard braking between 2500-6500 rpm in second gear (OK, 2 shifts to third), on a Norton 750. A minor dustfall obscured the centerline in one corner, causing me to overshoot just a bit. Luckily, there was a viewpoint/turnout there for extra shutdown room. After a couple of minutes stopped waiting for my heart rate to go below 100, I noticed car headlights coming uphill. I thought that smoking this turkey would surely cheer me up.

Restarted and ready to go, I watched a '57 Plymouth (BIG fins!) sail by with negligible tire noise. I attempted to jump on his butt. I saw his taillights for 4 turns.

A few days later I rode up Mt. Wilson for the daytime guided tour. I queried a guide about the mystery Plymouth. He told me that a Hungarian astronomer with a grant had been driving up the hill 6 nights/week for 5 years in an old Plymouth with a 392 HEMI. I had been owned

For easterners I offer 318 turns in 11 miles:

That's the map. Here is the image:

Does this pic make it look like roads rape the wilderness? Here is the fansite:

Cheoah Dam at the bottom of both images can be seen in the old "Two Lane Blacktop" (grey-primer '55 Chev drag racer/James Taylor[yawn] & Warren Oates) and the more recent "The Fugitive" (Tommy Lee Jones) movies.

I drove the tail a few times, fortunately uphill/SB in cars of modest performance.

Nearby is the Cherohala Scenic Skyway, which kills more people yearly than the Dragon. 48 miles of road built between 1964-1996 at a cost of $100MIL was expected to carry 1 million vehicles yearly. Current traffic between the bustling hamlets of Tellico Plains TN (cut off from the world by a TVA lake) and Robbinsville NC is less than 10K vehicles yearly.

The states should advertise such roads for scenic, "brisk" cruising.

Irvine huh? I used to live there in Villa Coronado. Irvine used to be a fun place to race... a lot of open room. Now its all built up and the cops are crazy. It's still a nice place though.
