Hello. I need complete information on air filters.
Best company? K&N or BMC or other?
How much does a good air filter cost? Is it easy to install on every engine?
How much is the average gain in torque and HP? At what rpm range?
Will the engine lose any of it's reliability if I install an air filter?
How much time does it take to install one?
Are there ANY disadvantages to installing one? Will I lose the company warranty?
Do I have to make ANY other modifications if I install an air filter?
Will the fuel consumption increase?
Please, I need full and detailed replies from ppl who know. Thanks.

On Friday i made the first modification on my car, i installed an air filter. It is from K&N Filters, which i believe is the best. It cost me about 90euros and it was installed by "Theoharis Motosport" (i believe u know them). The hole deal took them about 10 min. and it's very easy to install it. There r no reliability problems and disadvantages after the istallation. As for the warranty, some stupid companies like Toyota have "problem" even with that! ! ! Now, about hp and torque gain, "Theoharis" told me about 2-3hp and 0.1kgm of torque, but if u reprogram the ECU maybe u will gain something more. On my car the factory says 115hp, but after the 1st dyno test last week i saw 125hp on the engine, this week i'm planning another dyno test (thank god, the guy who owns the dyno is a friend of my uncle and i get a price cut) to see the gain from the air filter. And at last the fuel consumption increase is negligible. I hope i helped u. . .

Now you say air filter, so I assume all you mean is the actaul filter, NOT a cold air intake so....
As far as "best" as long as there cotton there all good, I have only used K&N and they are the most well known. Prices depend on application, but figure 35-70 USD. Its jsut as easy to instal as any OEM air filter on your car now. Hp/tq gain, well MAYBE 1-2 if your lucky, if you "feel" any difference after changing air filters all that means is that your old one was dirty lol. There are no disadvantages, and it will not effect any warranty. Finally fuel milage won't change, if anything it will be better. Just make sure you keep it clean.
Hope I answered all your questions.

mainly the problem in air filters is the position of the filter when installing .
you need to find a good place for the air filter so that it will not take the heat of the engine and there is nothing standing between it and getting cold air .
if installed wrong you will feel the engine less smoth and it may get heated so the position is vey important .
air filters don't rain Hp ( some companys "say " that they add 0.5-1.5 Hp so that they will get more costumers ) , mainly air filters make the engine breath much better than ordinary filter .
ohh and by the way if you change from an ordinary filter to an air filter you will hear much better engine noise ( i like it )
K&N are one of the best airfilters " i " know but i guess they are one of the best in the word ( in israel they are the best i guess) , for the price i don't think i will be relavent becouse we are from diffrent countrys with diffrent taxes and more .
so any way hope i helped a bit

"Theoharis Motosport"
Are they in Athens?
this week i'm planning another dyno test (thank god, the guy who owns the dyno is a friend of my uncle and i get a price cut)
How much does a dyno test cost? (without the price cut :P )

Yes, thank you for clarifying this, I did NOT mean a cold air intake.

Even without HP raise, I think this is worth it.
Well, thank you guys, you've been really helpful!!
I expect more replies.

No, they r only in Larissa. The cost of the dyno test here is about 45euros, and that is because here in Larissa we have only one dyno, i believe in Athens u can find cheaper prices. BTW, in which car r u planning to install it?

I don't know yet... I'll have to think about it. Besides, I don't own any car yet, so... you understand.

Why are we going through year old topics?
Okay Airfilters, yeah some may help the engine breathe better but keep in mind the better they breathe the more garbage gets through the filter. I use old school paper/cotton ones myself.. Cheap and effective.. You not going to see any gain from an air filter.. Unless its extremely dirty or Pre WWII

Very true... if you are going to change your filter to try and get an advantage, just replace it with a cool air intake. Save your money and upgrade your chip.

Volant is pretty awesome. thats what i got from me truck
as fgar as filters, its all synthetic. dont get paper, dont get nylon, its all about the synthetic

I put a BMC intake and filter in the 911 and I love it. Sounds better, and in the from around 4500 rpms to 7000 it's supposed to rev .42 seconds faster. I chose BMC because that's what the Porsche race cars used. As far as gas, it is supposed to improve your gas mileage. If you have the money, upgrade the ecu as well, I did it and notice a difference and love it.

The only way its gonna imporve gas mileage is by being restrictive

Nov 20, 2005, 10:56 PM
http://www.knfilters.com/feedback.htm No, they really do give you better gas mileage. Remember I've had one in my Talon, 3000 GT, VR6, and 911 and I got better gas mileage with no restriction. So have most of these guys on the feedback page.

gah, iroc means that you dont get better gas milage, the new filter is just less restirctive than the old, and therefor releases better gas milage because more air, and less gas, goes into your cylinders.
want to get even better gas milage? take your filter, and all air tubing off completly. including o2 sensor and all.

Air filters huh!!!It seems if you take out the air filter it will speed up the acceleration!!!!If I'm 40 I don't think I'll buy a sport car anymore.Maybe a Toyota...something relexing!!!!!

K&N filters and piperX are pretty good too, u can get them for about £90, depending on your make and model they are relatively easy to fit, you should get a cold air feed with it too if not it helps to buy one, they increase bhp but not by too much for example if u only had a small 1.2 engined car u wouldnt notice a difference in performance but sounds better, with a larger engine eg. 2.0 they could increase mayb 10 bhp, with torque im not so sure but it does use a bit more fuel especially in cold weather, if its the only mod to your engine i would say dont bother, if u plan to do more it will help

actually it doesnt because a lot of **** is getting into your engine which would decrease performance, the colder and purer the air is the better

You don't know much about cars do you. If an O2 sensor dies on your car you get worse gas mileage. You definitely live up to your name.:D

I'm pretty sure that bmc are the best.depending on the car you have the hp raise is about 6-8 hp.it costs about 80e.Nasmania at Amfitheas is a very good shop(I know people that are very satisfied). As for a dyno it's about 60-70e.

And they are the filter of choice of many racers in Le mans racing, so that says something too.

Ever hear of sarcasm?
Guys yes you can gain a few unnoticeable horses from a less restrictive filter. You will not feel the difference and the more air that gets to the maf the more fuel your injectors are going to release. Also remeber that because its letting in more air it is also letting in more dirt.. I will stick to my paper filters thank you.

thats true. the better the airfilter is working for you, the worse it is for your engine.
paper is works well, but, its really restrictive and when wet, sucks.
and then there the nylon ones, which are reusable, but they only filter because the have oil on the nylon, and the dirt catches to the oil, and then gets washed off, but when people wash them, they usaully do it all worng, and then dont oil it properly, if at all, in effect, might as well not have the filter on at all.
synthetic is the best if you want it to breathe as much as possible and still actaully do wahst its supposed to. and they are reusable, and dont need to be oiled. and it works just as well wet when dry, good for off road vehicles who need the filter to work as much as possible, and when wet. synthetic what they use, if its good enough for seriuous off roaders, its good enough for the sports car enthusiasts whose car only contact with dirt is that off the road and air
