We are shocked and saddened to learn of our co-founder Keith Duckworth’s untimely death. Everyone at Cosworth sends their deepest condolences to Keith’s wife Jill and his children. Keith was a true innovator and a genuine legend in his lifetime, his name will live on as an integral part of both the Cosworth name and culture.

Cosworth founder dies

Keith Duckworth, the 'worth' in the famous 'Cosworth' name, has passed away at the age of 72. With Mike Costin - 'Cos' - he founded the engine building company in 1958, which is now controlled by the owners of the Champ Car series.

But in 1966, commissioned by Ford, England-based Cosworth's DFV V8 design started on a road that would make the name synonymous with F1. The basic design won more than 150 grands prix. Williams and Scuderia Toro Rosso will be Cosworth powered in 2006.

"Keith was a true innovator and a legend in his lifetime," said Cosworth's commercial director Bernard Ferguson.

Meanwhile, on 20 December, Austrian Karl Wendlinger - who drove 41 grands prix and nearly died in a 1994 crash in Monte Carlo - is celebrating his 37th birthday.

Why is everyone dying this year? Jeez.

He seemed to have lived a good life, and the sport of formula 1 owes alot to him. I mean, wasn't the Cosworth DFV V-8 used in Formula 1 for decades? That's pretty rare in my opinion.

Rest in Peace. I don't really have any info on the guy, but anyone who dies is sad news. Nature has its ways.

A great loss.

Keith Duckworth didn't invent the dohc 4V head. He was just first to make them fast and last for awhile.

Rumor has it that the 4AG-E was Toyota's application of better casting/manufacturing techniques to a 20-year-old Cosworth design. Such sealed spec 1.6L Toys have cranked above 240HP in Formula Atlantic in recent years. (see: best engine sound)
